Trib HSSN boys basketball player of the week: Derek Errett

School: Fort Cherry

Class: Senior

Height: 5-foot-11

Position: Point guard

What coach says: “Even though his shots were not falling and Karns City was sending help defenders at him, he continued to attack the basket and finish with 26 points,” Fort Cherry coach Eugene Briggs said. “He continues to play the same way he has the entire season. His poise and intelligent play is what separates him from most point guards.

“As an all-around point guard, it would be hard to find one better. Fort Cherry is 96-20 with him at point guard over his career. The team has won three section titles and has three 20-win seasons in the last three years. He is definitely special.”

#Earned: As the Fort Cherry point guard, Errett is adept as running the offense and distributing the basketball. He also can score, pumping in 20 points in district playoff wins over Winchester Thurston and Northgate. In the Rangers’ PIAA first round playoff game at District 9 Karns City on Saturday, Fort Cherry started slow, scoring only seven points in the first quarter and went to the locker room at halftime trailing the Gremlins by eight points. However, the No. 3 seed out of the WPIAL came to life in the second half thanks to Errett, who scored a game-high 26 points as the Rangers moved on to face Serra Catholic in the second round following a 61-52 win. This season, he has averaged 19 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.5 steals, 5.6 assists and only 1.2 turnovers per game.

Background: Errett is capping off an outstanding career on the hardwood for the Rangers that included a trip to The Pete in his sophomore season when Fort Cherry fell to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the finals. Errett is the all-time leader in assists and steals at Fort Cherry. He still hasn’t decided what sport he will play at the next level as Errett is also an accomplished soccer player who plays club travel soccer in the spring. Errett is also an honor roll student at Fort Cherry.
