Trib HSSN girls basketball team of the week: Elizabeth Forward Warriors
Coach – Noah Yartin (1st season)
Record: 6-0 in Section 3-4A, 13-2 overall
Last year: Elizabeth Forward won the Section 3-4A championship with a perfect 12-0 record, finishing two games in front of Belle Vernon. The Warriors finished 17-7 overall, losing to Highlands in the district quarterfinals, 43-27, then falling to Beaver in the 4A consolation first round, 57-52.
#Earned: The Warriors cruised to a pair of section wins last week to maintain their spot atop the section. On Monday, EF outscored third-place West Mifflin, 39-12 in the second and third quarters combined to pull away to a 70-34 win on the road. Two days later, the Warriors led by 27 points after the opening quarter and by 43 points by halftime as they went on to win big over Ringgold, 65-9.
Scoring stars: In the showdown at West Mifflin, it was a typical day at the office for the Elizabeth Forward offense as balanced scoring prevailed with four Warriors in double-digits. The lone senior on the team, Alyssa Terza, led the way with 19 points while junior Michelle Jellison and sophomore Kaelynn Settles both scored 12 points and junior Chloe Zombek added 11. In the blowout victory over Ringgold, Terza led EF with 15 points while Jellison once again chipped in 12 points.
Remember when: Elizabeth Forward has reached the district semifinals twice in the last five years, losing in the 4A semifinals in 2019 and ‘22. The last time the Warriors reached the WPIAL championship game was 11 years ago when EF lost to South Park in the 2013 Class 3A title game, 50-33. Next season will be the 50th anniversary of the only WPIAL girls basketball crown captured by Elizabeth Forward. The Warriors defeated Baldwin in the 1975 Class 3A finals, 49-39.
