Trib HSSN football team of the week – North Allegheny Tigers
Coach: Art Walker (20th season)
Result: North Allegheny 21, Canon-McMillan 13
Record: 4-1 in Class 6A, 7-1 overall
#Earned: The 2025 season has been a challenging one for North Allegheny, yet it has been very successful … again. Coming into Week 7, the Tigers were 6-1. Half of those wins though were hard-fought single-digit victories. So when North Allegheny led Canon-McMillan 14-7 at halftime, NA felt comfortable that success would continue in the second half, and that is what happened as the Tigers outscored the Big Macs in the final two quarters 7-6 to win at home, 21-13. The win was significant in that it clinched a WPIAL playoff berth for the 22nd consecutive season, plus it was win No. 200 for Art Walker as head coach of North Allegheny. In his 21st season at NA, Walker has a record of 200-50 with five district championships and two PIAA football crowns.
Statistical standouts: Second-year starting quarterback Brady Brinkley continues to shine in a balanced offensive attack. On Friday, Brinkley completed 15 of 24 passes for 208 yards and touchdown tosses of 26 yards to senior wide receiver Cameron Kushner to open the scoring and a 33-yard TD strike to senior wideout Kory Pitts. The junior signal caller has completed 97 of 171 passes for 1,226 yards and 12 touchdowns and has spread the ball around between Kushner, Pitts, junior wide receiver Mason Brown and sophomore wide out Ben Kern. While many players have contributed to the Tigers rushing attack, the bellcow has been senior Luke Rohan. The 210-pound tailback carried the ball 25 times for 109 yards and a 1-yard plunge. He has a team high 720 yards on the ground this season on 140 carries with 12 touchdowns.
Last year: North Allegheny began the 2024 season in search of history. The Tigers were trying to become only the third WPIAL team to capture three straight district titles in the district’s highest classification after Penn Hills did it from 1976-78 and North Allegheny accomplished it between 2010-12. The Tigers won their first five games before falling in Week 5 to Central Catholic, 27-14. NA finished the regular season with four consecutive wins to finish in second place in Class 6A. North Allegheny rolled past Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals, 48-14, setting up a battle with Central Catholic for the third straight year in the 6A finals. The Tigers’ two-year reign over 6A football in the WPIAL ended when the Vikings prevailed, 45-14. Sophomore QB Brady Brinkley threw for 1,210 yards and 10 touchdowns and Luke Rohan rushed for 707 yards and eight touchdowns as North Allegheny finished 10-2 for the season with both losses coming to eventual PIAA runner-up Central Catholic.
Remember when: This year marks a big anniversary for the first two of six WPIAL championships captured by North Allegheny. It was 35 years ago when the Tigers won their first WPIAL and PIAA football championships. Former head coach Jim Rankin, who retired in 2004, guided the Tigers to a WPIAL championship win in the 4A title game against rival Butler, 9-0. A few weeks later, NA won the third PIAA 4A championship with a victory over District 1 winner Ridley, 21-14. Twenty years later, North Allegheny captured double gold again in 2010. In the sixth season inder Art Walker, the Tigers won the first of three straight district crowns with a victory over defending champion Woodland Hills, 21-14. In the PIAA playoffs, NA knocked off State College and Cumberland Valley to reach the state championship game where it blanked District 12 champ LaSalle College, 21-0.
Week 7 honorable mention
Kiski Area
Following a victory on opening night, hard times hit the Kiski Area football team in the form of four consecutive losses, including defeats at the hands of Gateway and Penn-Trafford in their first two Class 5A Big East Conference games. However, the tide appears to have turned for the Cavaliers with three straight wins, including in Week 7 when quarterback Landyn Artman completed 22 of 33 passes for 289 yards and two touchdowns and top target Aven Shirley had 10 catches for 184 yards and a TD in a key victory over visiting Armstrong, 27-25.
West Allegheny
Entering Week 7, everybody was looking up at New Castle in the Class 4A Parkway Conference. The Red Hurricanes controlled their destiny, knowing if they defeated West Allegheny, Ambridge and Blackhawk — three teams with a combined overall record heading into Friday of 6-14 — NeCa High would win the conference. However, history shows things rarely are smooth when it comes to the Parkway. Brodie Cornell rushed for 145 yards and scored three touchdowns as West Allegheny stunned New Castle, 27-14, to force a four-way tie for first place between the Indians, Red Hurricanes, Aliquippa and Montour.
Mohawk
This has been a challenging football season for the boys from Bessemer. Following an encouraging start to the campaign with a 17-point win over Neshannock in Week Zero, Mohawk lost four straight games and five of six, leaving it 1-3 in the Class 2A Midwestern Athletic Conference and 2-5 overall heading into a Week 7 battle against undefeated Western Beaver. However, quarterback Bobby Fadden had a touchdown run and a 35-yard interception return as the Warriors stunned the Golden Beavers, 40-20, to climb back into the crowded MAC playoff picture.
Bentworth
Jefferson-Morgan had become the beast of the Class A Tri-County South Conference over the last year and a half, building up an 18-game regular season winning streak. The last time the Rockets lost in the regular season was Oct. 20, 2023 when they fell to West Greene, 31-16. Bentworth was hardly impressed though, as it pulled away in the second half for a huge home win. Ben Hays rushed for 188 yards and scored four touchdowns as the Bearcats stunned the Rockets, 35-13, leaving both teams at 4-1 in the TCS, one game behind first place California.
