Some teams thrive on the pressures of a big game; those are the ones that usually are lined up on the basepath with gold hanging from their necks.

Then there are those who come up short, and either settle for silver or worse and see their season end short of the state playoffs.

Championship week was one of turmoil for many of the elite teams from last week’s Trib HSSN state softball rankings.

A total of 10 teams dropped out of the Top 5, either for good or at least for the time being.

With only two weeks of PIAA postseason remaining, we saw Wilson West Lawn, Seneca Valley, Penn-Trafford, Greencastle-Antrim, Tunkhannock, Northern Lebanon, South Park, Lake Lehman, Southern Huntingdon and Curwensville drop out.

Their vacancies left the door open for 10 new teams: Owen J. Roberts, Chambersburg, Red Land, Shaler, Bellefonte, Kennard-Dale, Mohawk, Pine Grove, Williams Valley and Berlin-Brothersvalley.

While there were changes galore, only two top-ranked teams fell from their perch as Tunkhannock in 4A saw its season end with a D-2 loss and Carmichaels’ first loss in the D-7 finals dropped them from No. 1 to No. 5 in Class A.

The other top-ranked teams continue to shine with Hempfield in 6A, Central Mountain in 5A, Sharon in 3A and Neshannock in 2A.
