It was a good start for the elite high school football teams across the state, but not a great start as the 27 teams from last week’s HSSN preseason state rankings were a combined 18-9 in Week Zero.
Despite nine teams losing, it only cost three schools a place in the Top 5 as Harrisburg, Central Valley and Steel Valley all fell out.
The other six teams that lost slipped down but not out of the rankings heading into Week 1.
Two of the teams that slipped in the rankings were Southern Columbia in 2A, going from No. 1 to No. 3 after losing to Wyomissing, and Westinghouse, which also dropped from 1 to 3 in Class A after losing a close one to Beaver.
Joining St. Joe’s Prep (6A), Peters Township (5A), Aliquippa (4A) and Northwestern Lehigh (3A) at No.1 in their classifications are Troy in 2A and Bishop Guilfoyle in A.
There are several stiff challenges this weekend for the Top 30 teams, including a clash between ranked teams as 4A No. 3 Pope John Paul II from District 1 hosts 3A No. 5 Neumann-Goretti from D-12.
Here are the latest Trib HSSN rankings in each of the six classifications. Teams are listed with overall record, last week’s ranking and district.
