The powers that be in high school football across the state did not buckle with the first taste of October football last week. Instead, they were near perfect.

Twenty-nine of the 30 teams from last week’s Trib HSSN rankings were in action. They were a combined 28-1.

The one loss was going to happen no matter what when the top two teams in Class 6A collided on the District 12 stage in Week 6.

The outcome was historic as for the first time in years, St. Joe’s Prep has been knocked from its perch at No. 1 in 6A, and it took a herculean effort to do so.

It took LaSalle College four overtimes in what might end up being the PIAA game of the year, but the Explorers outlasted the Hawks, 35-34, in four overtimes.

As LaSalle College takes over at No. 1 in 6A, the other top-ranked teams remain on top with Bishop McDevitt in 5A, Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast in 4A, Northwestern Lehigh in 3A, Troy in 2A and Bishop Guilfoyle in A still at No. 1.

Will the Explorers’ stay on top be a short one?

On Friday, LaSalle College hits the road to battle Class 4A No. 1 Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast in another huge District 12 contest.
