As we prepare to kick off October football, the final weekend of high school football in September was rough for a couple of top-ranked teams.

The big District 12 showdown between ranked teams went to Class 5A Roman Catholic in a nail-biter, as it edged Class 6A No. 1 LaSalle College.

Another No. 1 team to fall in Week 5 was Pope John Paul II, as the District 1 Golden Panthers fell to Upper Perkiomen.

While LaSalle College stays put at No. 1, Pope John Paul II drops to No. 3 in 4A, replaced at the top by the previous 4A top-ranked team, Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast.

The six teams on top of their respective classifications are LaSalle College in 6A, Peters Township in 5A, Monsignor Bonner-Archbishop Prendergast in 4A, Northwestern Lehigh in 3A, Troy in 2A and Fort Cherry in A.

Two teams lost their spot in the Top 5: Aliquippa in 4A and Williams Valley in 2A. Entering the state rankings this week are Susquehanna Township in 4A and the team that beat Williams Valley, Schuylkill Haven, in 2A.

There is another monster battle in District 12 Class 6A this week as LaSalle College squares off against Class 6A No. 3 St. Joseph’s Prep.
