Trib HSSN softball player of the week: Gianna Ferrieri

School: Seton LaSalle

Class: Senior

Position: First base, pitcher

#Earned: Ferrieri often admits people mispronounce her last name. It is pronounced Fer-rare-ee, but people often call her Ferrari, like the car. Although it might be understandable because her play this past week and this season has been like that of a finely tuned, fast-moving machine. Ferrieri and her Seton LaSalle teammates had a rare doubleheader on Wednesday in which they were completing not one but two previously suspended section games at home. In the first game, she ended up going 2 for 4 with two runs scored and two RBIs as the Rebels finished off a win over playoff-bound Burgettstown, 13-2. She also pitched a complete game, giving up two earned runs, scattering seven hits and getting five strikeouts. In the second game, Ferrieri went 3 for 3 with two doubles and a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs as Seton LaSalle defeated Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, 8-3, to finish in a tie for second place with the Chargers in Section 3-2A behind section winner Chartiers-Houston. She was the winning pitcher in that game as well, going 6 1/3 innings with three earned runs on eight hits and four K’s. Seton LaSalle completed the regular season with a victory Friday over Allderdice. In that game, Ferrieri was 1 for 3 with a triple, a run scored and an RBI, plus she allowed no runs on two hits with four strikeouts in three innings. For the week, she was 6 for 10 with five runs scored, six RBIs, two doubles, a triple and a home run along with two wins.

Background: Ferrieri will continue her academic and softball career starting in fall at Carlow, where she plans to study nursing. In the circle, Ferrieri has split time with freshman Layla Chapman. The senior is 4-1 with a 3.43 ERA with 34 2/3 innings, 17 earned runs and 37 hits allowed with 14 walks and 32 strikeouts. Offensively, she leads the team in batting average, on-base percentage, hits, home runs, runs scored and slugging percentage. She is batting .674 (29 for 43) with 27 runs scored and 17 RBIs. She has six doubles, three triples and four home runs. Her on-base percentage is .725, slugging percentage is 1.233 and she has a 1.958 OPS. Ferrieri says her studies have always been important, and she backs that up with a 4.45 grade point average. She played basketball and volleyball when she was younger and stopped playing both before her days at Seton LaSalle, although she wishes she would have kept playing volleyball into high school. She has two younger brothers: Nico, who is 15 years old, and Marco, who is 8 years old. Her family lives in South Park, and her and her friends like to go shopping. She also likes to clean and be organized.

What coach says: “Gia had a great week in finishing up section play, which I knew she would,” Seton LaSalle coach Cindy Beauregard said. “Gia’s confidence is off the charts this year. She’s a true captain that leads by example and has been doing it all year long.

“She doesn’t get flustered, and she knows what she has to do either at the plate or in the circle and she gets it done. I would say that Gia has a mental toughness, through ups and downs, during the season or in a game, she remains focused and solid. She will always get the extra bases on a hit or the runs needed and makes the plays in the field exactly when the team needs her to.

“From her junior year to this year, she has not only built up her own confidence, but she is having fun with her teammates. She’s not putting any pressure on herself, and she is just enjoying the moment and playing a game that she loves with her friends.

“Gia is a selfless player. She does what she needs for her team, and, at the same time, she is always motivating her team to be their best. She is a true leader, humble and kind, always with a smile on her face. Gia is a teammate that you want to have on the field with you.”
