Trib HSSN softball player of the week – Mia Pruehs
School – Union
Class – Senior
Position – Pitcher
#Earned – Mia Pruehs has been a championship pitcher since her freshman year and one of the top pitchers in the district this spring. However, she took it to another level this past week as top-seeded Union opened up postseason play in the district Class A playoffs. In the quarterfinals Monday, Pruehs threw a five-inning no-hitter, allowing one walk and striking out 14 of the 17 batters she faced as Union rolled past Jeannette, 10-0. The victory was more impressive Friday as the Scotties blanked Jefferson-Morgan, 15-0, in the WPIAL semifinals. In three innings of work in the circle, Pruehs allowed one hit and walked two while striking out six. She starred at the plate as well, going 3 for 3 with two home runs, three runs scored and five runs batted in. Pruehs will get the start for a fourth straight year in the circle at the WPIAL Class A championship game when Union faces Carmichaels at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The Scotties are 2-1 in title games she has pitched, winning gold in 2022 and 2023 and settling for silver in 2024.
Background – Pruehs will continue her academic and softball career at Canisius in New York next fall. The no-hitter against Jeanette was her fourth no-no of the season. When she was younger, she was a cheerleader and played volleyball all the way through her freshman season at Union. Pruehs was also part of the uber-successful girls basketball program at Union. She was a first team all-section member as a guard and forward after averaging 7.2 points per game in helping the Scotties win a third straight WPIAL Class A title this winter. In the circle this season, Pruehs is 12-2 with a 0.97 ERA. In 79 innings pitched, she has given up 11 earned runs on 36 hits while walking 27 and striking out 168. At the plate, she is batting .520 (26 for 50) with eight home runs and 37 runs batted in. She has a .565 on base percentage, a 1.180 slugging percentage and a OPS of 1.745. Mia has an older sister Kendall. The two superstitions Pruehs has on game day is saying goodbye to the family dog Duke, then putting her wristband on first at the field before she does anything else.
What coach says – “I believe it was the wait to play since we got canceled twice; it seemed to fire everyone up,” Union coach Doug Fisher said of Pruehs’ semifinal performance. “It was special because she missed her senior trip due to the game being played Friday.”
“Her pure athleticism and strength,” Fisher said is what makes Pruehs special on the diamond. She has a great will to win.”
“Girls that achieve so much tend to rise to the top and makes it very easy for others to follow,” Fisher said. “We have a bunch of leaders, alphas if you will, but they all have the same goal, so it’s got a good flow.”
