#Earned — The Saxonburg secret is no more. The Knoch softball program is enjoying great success this spring having clinched the Section 1-4A crown and sitting at 17-1 overall with 17 straight victories thanks in part to the play of a rookie. Freshman sensation Emersyn Jones continued her terrific campaign with a big week that led to four wins, three section victories and securing a section title. On Monday, she was 1 for 4 with a run scored, two RBIs and her first home runs of the week in a victory over Highlands. The next day, Davis went 3 for 4 with three runs scored, five RBIs, a double and another home run in a win over Valley. Wednesday against Greensburg Salem, the ninth-grader proved she was human when she went 0 for 2 with a run scored. However the next day, Davis returned to form by going 3 for 5 with a run, five RBIs and another long ball in a triumph over Burrell. For the week, Davis was 7 for 15 with six runs scored, 12 RBIs, a double and three home runs. In the Thursday game, Jones saw some time in the circle, pitching 1 1/3 innings and striking out two.
Background — For her first high school season, Jones is batting .574 (27 for 47) with 27 runs scored and 37 RBIs. She has 17 extra-base hits with six doubles, a triple and 10 home runs. She has walked 11 times and struck out seven. She has a .655 on-base percentage, a .400 slugging percentage and a 2.038 OPS. Defensively, she has a .939 fielding percentage with only three errors. Jones has pitched in three games with 9 1/3 innings pitched, allowing one earned run, four hits with two walks and 13 strikeouts with a 1-0 record. Jones has played softball since she was very young, when she also played soccer, giving up that sport in seventh grade. She also plays volleyball and was part of the Knights team in the fall. Her younger brother Liam is 12 years old and can also be found on the diamond playing baseball. Her family has two dogs, Charlie and Dakota. Her favorite holiday is the Fourth of July.
What coach says — “It’s what she has been doing all year,” Knoch coach Chris Gardner said of the big week for Davis. “She is very confident in her ability. She doesn’t dwell on not getting on base. It’s like an ‘oh, well, I’ll get her next time’ mentality.
“I knew she was going be good,” Gardner said of expecting this kind of production from the freshman. “I did not expect her to have the season that she is having.”
“She has solidified our middle infield and has been solid in the circle when called upon. She is just a great kid that is focused on what she wants. She puts in the work.”
