Trib HSSN softball team of the week – Neshannock Lancers
Coach – Jackie Lash (seventh year)
Record – Neshannock literally won everything this spring. The Lancers captured the Section 1-2A crown with a record of 12-0, finishing two games ahead of second-place Laurel. Neshannock captured a fourth straight WPIAL championship with a victory over Chartiers-Houston, then captured a second straight PIAA title with a triumph over South Williamsport. The Lancers finished the season with a record of 26-0, the third undefeated season in four years and heads into the 2026 season with a district record 52-game winning streak.
#Earned – You could call the Neshannock softball team the Team of the Week, the Team of the Year and quite possibly on its way to the Team of the Decade. Following wins over Sharpsville in the first round that broke their own WPIAL winning streak record at 49 straight, No. 50 in a row came in the quarterfinals against Chestnut Ridge. That set the stage for a WPIAL Class 2A championship game rematch in the state semifinals against Chartiers-Houston. The drama exited the game very early as the Lancers scored nine runs in the first inning against the Buccaneers. When Neshannock added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, it guaranteed an early exit as the Lancers defeated Chartiers-Houston in five innings, 12-1. Returning to Penn State for the third time in four years to face District 4 champion South Williamsport in the PIAA 2A finals, Neshannock actually was behind the Mounties after four innings, 2-1. However, the Lancers scored five times in the top of the fifth inning and added two more in the seventh to secure a third undefeated state championship season in the last four years, 8-3.
Standout performers – Senior pitcher Addy Frye closed out a dominant career in an appropriate way. In the state semifinals, the Providence commit limited the Chartiers-Houston offense to one earned run on one hit with two walks and 10 strikeouts. At the plate, she was 2 for 3 with two doubles and three RBIs. In the finals against South Williamsport, Frye was 1 for 2 with a home run. Fellow seniors and Kent State commits Miley Anderson and Gabby Quinn also shined in the big games. In the semifinals, Anderson was 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI. In the state title game, Quinn delivered the big hit to blow open a close game when she connected on a bases loaded clearing double down the left-field line, ending the game with four runs batted in. Some underclassmen also chimed in as junior Jaidon Nogay was 3 for 4 in the semifinals and 1 for 3 with two RBIs in the finals. Freshman Brenna Frengel was 2 for 2 with an RBI in her first PIAA championship game.
Last year – Even though the team had repeated as WPIAL Class 2A softball champions in 2023, the season ended with a loss to Everett in the PIAA semifinals. It would be the only career loss for four Neshannock seniors who graduated last month. The 2024 softball season would begin with a whitewash of Ambridge, 11-0, the first of 18 shutout wins for the season. The Lancers won the Section 1-2A regular season title with a 12-0 section record, two games in front of Laurel and four games better than Shenango. In the 2024 WPIAL playoffs, Neshannock would outscore three opponents, 19-1, beating Riverside in the quarterfinals, 11-1; Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the semifinals, 5-0; and Bentworth in the district championship game, 3-0. In the PIAA postseason, the Lancers would dominate again, winning four games by a score of 29-2. Neshannock blanked West Shamokin in the first round, 11-0; Saegertown in the quarterfinals, 5-0; rival Laurel in the semifinals, 1-0; and South Williamsport in the state title game, 12-2. The team finished what was then a second undefeated season in three years with a record of 26-0.
Remember when – Over the last 13 years, the Neshannock softball program has flexed its muscles, collecting a lot of gold in the process. The Lancers have won six WPIAL championships, captured in 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022, 2014 and 2013. They are now tied with Hempfield with the most PIAA softball championships among WPIAL schools with four. Those state crowns were won in 2025, 2024, 2022 and the first ever softball title of any sort came in the 2012 season. That season, Neshannock won the Section 5-2A title by two games over Riverside and four games ahead of Mohawk. In the district playoffs, following a first-round bye, the Lancers blanked Freeport, 4-0, but then lost to eventual champion Deer Lakes in the semifinals, 2-0. Neshannock qualified for the state playoffs with another win over Riverside in the 2A consolation game, 3-2. In the PIAA postseason, the Lancers eliminated Philipsburg-Osceola from District 6 in the first round, 5-3, knocked off Fairview from District 10 in the quarterfinals, 4-3, rolled past Central (Martinsburg) from District 6 in the semifinals, 15-5, then edged District 11 Warrior Run in the 2A state finals in eight innings, 4-3, for the school’s first softball championship. Neshannock had four players make the first team all-section that season, including senior pitcher Amanda Furst, freshman infielder Madison Shaffer, junior outfielder Rayanna Furst and sophomore outfielder Madison Altmeyer.
