Freeport came into Friday’s Class 3A Allegheny 7 Conference matchup at UPMC Graham Field with a chance to clinch the conference championship.
The path was much easier for No. 2-ranked Imani Christian. A win would clinch the conference title and give the Saints their second straight undefeated regular season.
Junior quarterback Gabe Jenkins ran for three scores and passed for three more touchdowns as the Saints cruised to a 53-7 win at home.
“This is Job 1,” Imani coach LaRoi Johnson said. “It’s a win that we wanted to make sure we captured. We aimed to get back to this point, and we’re happy that we did, but we’re still going to be grinding towards the ultimate prize.”
Imani Christian (10-0, 6-0) and Freeport (7-3, 4-2) had already clinched playoff spots heading into the game. The Saints join Elizabeth Forward and Avonworth as 3A conference champions. The loss dropped Freeport into third place in the Allegheny 7.
On the first offensive snap for the Saints, Jenkins raced 41 yards for a score.
With the score 6-0, Freeport put together a scoring drive from midfield, which was capped off when quarterback Drew Ross found Madden Wisniewski for a 23-yard touchdown, and the Yellowjackets took a 7-6 lead.
But about a minute later, Jenkins struck again with a 21-yard run. Anthony Portis’ conversion run gave Imani Christian a lead it would not relinquish.
Jenkins showed up defensively on the next possession, intercepting a Ross pass.
That led to his touchdown pass to David Davis from 38 yards.
That duo hooked up again with 2 minutes, 33 seconds left in the second quarter, this time from 50 yards. Portis added his second 2-point run of the half.
Jenkins, a junior who recently decommitted from Penn State, was not finished, scoring on a 19-yard run with 54 seconds left before halftime to put the Saints in front 34-7.
Davis added his third touchdown on a 2-yard run before Tyvon Sewell’s 2-yard run on the final play of the third quarter made the score 46-7.
Jenkins added his third passing touchdown of the game with a running clock, connecting with Robert-Torres Johnson on a 39-yard catch-and-run to make the final score 53-7.
The Saints defense held Freeport to 22 yards rushing in the game and forced three turnovers.
Johnson continues to be impressed with the Saints defense.
“They played lights out,” he said. “They have been playing great the entire season. There’s a lot of college football players on this team, and that’s part of what makes them special.”
Ross finished with 120 yards passing for the Yellowjackets.
Jenkins, who has eclipsed 1,000 yards passing and rushing on the season, rushed for 127 yards and passed for another 243 yards and totaled six touchdowns.
“He’s blazing up the record books, and he’s just such an outstanding player,” Johnson said of his QB. “He plays hard and plays the game the right way. He’s truly unselfish. He’s the ultimate competitor, and I love the way he plays the game.”
Imani Christian’s only loss last season came in the semifinals to eventual champion Avonworth.
Johnson said the team needs to work internally to have success again in the postseason.
“We just have to make sure that we show up in practice first and do our part,” he said. “We never try to worry about the other team; we just try and execute. If we eliminate the small distractions and the penalties, we can then just try and focus on ourselves.”
