SILVER SPRING TOWNSHIP — Spring-Ford entered the PIAA Class 4A volleyball tournament with a perfect 29-0 record. It finished the dream season with a 3-1 win over WPIAL runner-up Pine-Richland at the Cumberland Valley Eagle Dome on Saturday.
The game scores were 26-28, 25-10, 25-21 and 25-14.
“If someone had told me we would be unbeaten competing today, I would not have believed them, “said Spring-Ford coach George Fuller. “We have had adversity, injuries and anything else, but these kids would not quit.”
Game 1 went back and forth with some well-played volleyball. Spring-Ford led 23-20 but Pine-Richland rallied behind the hitting of Isabelle Hoppe to finally outlast Spring-Ford by a 28-26 score. Ela Hernandez and Piper Vogel contributed key points for the winning side.
Lila Olsen, Maya Angelucci and Alanna Bricker led Spring-Ford.
Olsen took over in the second game with the passing skills of Angelucci. She had nine points to lead Spring-Ford to a 21-10 lead. Spring-Ford put it away 25-10 to tie the match at one game each. Elle Sossong and Olsen led the unbeaten side with their ability to find the open floor with power.
The two teams played evenly in Game 3 as neither team had a three-point lead until the end. Pine-Richland used the solid hitting of Hoppe, Piper Vogel, Hernandez and Alana Seifert to win points, but the Royersford club kept coming back with points by Olsen, Sossong and Morgan Pupek. The game was tied four times until Spring-Ford took a 21-19 lead. A Hoppe kill cut the margin in half, but Olsen took over.
“Olsen was determined and would not let us lose that third or fourth game,” said Fuller. “Angelucci kept setting her or Sossong the ball and they kept delivering. We only have three seniors, and Bricker and Olsen played great tonight.”
Up 2-1, Spring Ford jumped out to a 10-5 lead behind Olsen and Sossong and never allowed Pine-Richland to get back into the game. Very solid blocking kept the Pine-Richland attack at bay.
Spring-Ford extended the lead to 18-8 and eventually 22-10 before finishing the game off to set off the celebration.
“Obviously we would have liked to be on the other end, but these kids defied expectations and got to the state finals after finishing second in District 7,” Pine-Richland coach Angela Seman said. “Nobody expected us to be here today, but these kids have nothing to hang their heads about. Film does not do their two bigs justice on their ability. Sossong and Olsen) had such height and strength to go through blocks and over the blocks. They were the difference today.”
“These seniors have been phenomenal in everything they do leading this team, and I do not want to think about how much they have done for this program.”
