The North Hills and Upper St. Clair baseball teams, which got a headstart to their schedules down south, each could add their WPIAL-leading seventh win Wednesday.

The two schools started their seasons in Myrtle Beach, S.C.

This year's spring trips were probably a bigger advantage than most, since many Western Pennsylvania teams were trapped indoors for all but a day or two. Consider Wednesday's matchups, North Hills (6-1, 2-0) hosts Kiski Area (0-1, 0-0) in Section 1-5A. Upper St. Clair (6-1, 1-1) hosts Bethel Park (0-2, 0-0) in Section 3-6A.

Will that early start make a difference moving forward?

There's a full slate of baseball and softball games scheduled for Wednesday with forecasts calling for temperatures in the 50s and little chance of rain.

No. 1 vs. No. 5 in Class A softball

Two ranked teams in Class A softball meet when No. 1 West Greene visits No. 5 Carmichaels for a Section 2-A contest.

West Greene (5-1, 2-0) is the defending WPIAL champion. Carmichaels (3-2, 2-1) is coming off a 7-2 loss to section foe Monessen, the second-ranked team in Class A.

Blackhawk, Hopewell renew rivalry

A Beaver County baseball rivalry renews Wednesday when No. 1 Blackhawk (4-0, 3-0) visits Hopewell (4-4, 2-1) in Section 2-4A. Blackhawk won the WPIAL title last season and Hopewell finished third after a semifinal loss.
