Allderdice Boys Fencing make playoffs for the 5th consecutive season as 4th seed; Girls enter as 3rd seed
PITTSBURGH, PA – Both Allderdice Fencing teams finished up their regular season with a record of 5-3. Seeded 4th, the Boys will enter the playoffs for the 5th consecutive season to defend their 4 consecutive Pittsburgh Interscholastic Fencing Association titles. The Girls are seeded 3rd having missed the playoffs last season.
Led by the freshmen duo, Sacha Miller (12-5) and Nevaeh Carter (10-3), and junior captain Andrea Uber (8-7), the Lady Dragons will fence 2nd ranked Fox Chapel High School (7-1) in the semifinals. The Boys are led by senior captain Ian Squire (10-10) and junior Jackson McCullough (12-8), and will face off against top ranked, undefeated Peters Township (8-0). Earlier in the season, Peters beat Allderdice Boys 8-1, while Fox Chapel beat the Lady Dragons in an early season match by a score of 7-2.
“We have a big challenge ahead of us,” said Head Coach Dan Yu. “Both teams we face are tough. They’re in the position they’re in because they are seasoned and experienced. We have prepared and matured as the season has progressed, and I think we’ll be ready for the meets on Friday. The Boys did not have (junior) Sage (Arnold) (6-2) for the Peters meet after he went down with the flu for a couple weeks, and we put David (Hosken) (2-10) in for his first action since returning from surgery to his fencing hand. Now that everyone is healthy, I think we’ll be much tougher.”
“When the girls fenced Fox Chapel, they were still learning the ropes. They’re made up of 5 complete rookies and a junior. The whole squad got a lot stronger as the season went on, so I am looking forward to this weekend. We’ll compete very well.”
The playoffs will take place at the Taylor Allderdice gymnasium, located at 2409 Shady Ave. Please enter the main gymnasium entrance. Semifinal round matches will begin at 6:30. Final rounds will commence immediately after the conclusion of the first round.
