City League football power Westinghouse has forfeited a win over Butler for using an ineligible player.
Westinghouse athletic director Anthony Hall confirmed the team’s forfeit and said the Week 4 victory at Butler was the only contest affected. Westinghouse had won 40-14.
The matchup was a non-league game with no impact on postseason qualifying.
Butler (6-1) is a WPIAL member playing an independent schedule and ineligible for any playoffs. Westinghouse (5-2, 3-0) has already clinched one of the top two spots in the City League playoffs.
The Westinghouse vs. Butler matchup was interesting because of the discrepancy in enrollment sizes.
The PIAA lists Westinghouse as a Class A-sized school with 127 boys in grades 9-11, the years used to determine a team’s classification. The Bulldogs have won three consecutive City League titles and finished as PIAA Class 2A runners-up in 2022 and ‘23.
Butler has 833 boys as the third-largest WPIAL school, but its football program struggled in Class 6A, prompting the team to pursue an independent schedule.
Westinghouse had won four years in a row over Butler prior to this season.
