Drew Gordon

School: Hempfield

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

Claim to fame: The senior guard and three-year starter helped the Spartans defeat Greensburg Central Catholic and Greensburg Salem at the Greensburg Salem Holiday Classic. He also played well in the Spartans’ loss to top-ranked Imani Christian on Thursday. He scored 10 points against GCC, 19 against Greensburg Salem and 17 against Imani. He averages 13 points.

What did upsetting Greensburg Central Catholic do for the team’s confidence?

It was huge for us. We had dropped consecutive games, and we needed to get back on track. It was also big because they were undefeated and a neighboring rival. It helped us against Imani.

What did the early season victory against Fox Chapel do for the team?

That was huge because we’ve had trouble beating them. It showed us that we could compete against some of the top teams.

What’s been your most memorable game?

Even though we lost, the game against Imani was big. We battled a talented team to the end. My top scoring game was 20 against Connellsville and my career-high 25 last year.

What do you like most about the team?

The family bond we have built. Everyone plays for each other. I love playing for the guys.

When did you start playing basketball?

My dad (Scott) got me started when I was 6. I was nervous when I started, but the more I played I learned to love it.

What is the biggest thing coach (Bill) Swan preaches?

He teaches family values, and he teaches defense.

Do you play any other sports?

I play volleyball.

Do you plan to play sports in college?

No. I’m going to Penn State and study biology. My plan is to be a physician’s assistant.

Who is your favorite basketball player?

I like Shai (Gilgeous-)Alexander’s game. He plays for Oklahoma City.

Where do you and your teammates head for a snack after practice or a game?

We got to Sheetz, and I get the app sampler: mozzarella sticks, Wisconsin cheese bites and chicken tenders.

What is your favorite meal that your mom or dad makes?

My mom makes a great Cajun shrimp pasta.

Where is your favorite vacation spot?

We go to Hilton Head Island. It’s a great beach and not as crowded as Myrtle Beach.

Do you have a dream vacation spot?

I’d like to go somewhere in the Caribbean.

What is the last movie you watched?

“The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.”

What type of music do you listen to?

I like all types of music, but if I had to pick one it would be rap.

What Pittsburgh sports team is your favorite?

The Steelers. I hope the defense picks it up. If they do, they should be fine. My favorite player is Najee Harris.

If you were to have dinner or lunch with anyone, who would it be?

Najee Harris. We’d talk football and joke around.

Madison DeRiggi

School: Franklin Regional

Class: Senior

Sport: Basketball

Claim to fame: A key backcourt leader for the Panthers, DeRiggi scored a game-high 22 points in a 40-36 win over Fox Chapel to keep Franklin Regional in first place in Section 1-5A. A consistent double-figure scorer and leader this season, she netted 16 in a 66-45 loss to 6A No. 1 Upper St. Clair at the Cal (Pa.) Hoopfest.

What’s it like being in first place in your section?

It’s a really good feeling knowing all our hard work is paying off.

You’re playing well right now individually. What is working well for you?

Getting to the hoop and drawing fouls and creating more offensive looks.

How long have you been playing basketball, and what got you started?

I started playing when I was 5 but started showing interest when I was 3 because my sister played.

What is the strength of your game?

Driving to the hoop and reading the other team’s offense and getting steals.

What are your team’s strengths?

Our size helps with our rebounds, and we are pretty strong defensively.
