With her name at the top of the Greensburg Central Catholic basketball points list, all-time leading scorer Erica Gribble has her sights on a milestone.
The Centurions senior point guard broke the girls career mark set by Ashley Henderson and the boys record held by Franco Sebastiani — both marks that stood since 2007 — and is getting closer to 2,000 career points.
Gribble, a Richmond commit, broke Sebastiani’s record with a first-quarter layup last week at Steel Valley.
“Getting the record felt surreal,” Gribble said. “When I made the shot, it really sunk in that I would be in the record books. I’m super thankful I was able to get that opportunity.
“I didn’t feel much pressure going into it, but I am definitely glad I got it quick and can focus on the rest of the season.”
Gribble has 1,791 points and counting for GCC, the No. 2-ranked team in WPIAL Class 3A.
A girls player from Westmoreland County has not reached 2,000 career points since Jeannette’s Ciara Gregory in 2013.
“I am very focused on getting a state title; that is my biggest goal,” Gribble said. “And hopefully on the way we can get 2,000.”
Gribble said Richmond reached out to congratulate her on the school record. She said landing in the record books is a credit to preparation.
“(The records) represent all the hard work and dedication I have put into this game,” she said. “I have always given my all, and I think getting these records has shown that.”
Gribble is ranked No. 80 in the ESPN Top 100 players in the Class of 2026. She competed in the Under Armour Future 60 game.
On another sidenote, Gribble also can become the top scorer in her family. Her older sister, Alayna, is the all-time leading scorer at Norwin with 1,782 points.
Norwin surges
Norwin went from the land of the unranked to the top five.
The Knights (4-0), off to a fast start, surged to the No. 2 spot in the Trib HSSN Class 6A rankings.
Canon-McMillan is No. 1 but dropped a nonsection game to North Hills on Tuesday night. The rest of the top five are Upper St. Clair, Seneca Valley and Butler.
Burrell also jumped into the Class 4A top five after being unranked. The Buccaneers (6-1) are No. 5.
GCC remains No. 2 in 3A.
Playing up
GCC has played in Class 3A the last two years due to the PIAA competitive balance rule, but GCC is a Class A program according to the latest enrollment numbers.
Still, GCC, which played in 2A two years ago, will do so again for the next two-year alignment cycle.
GCC has won back-to-back WPIAL titles, taking 2A in 2023-24 and 3A last season.
On the run
Two local teams lulled their opponents last week with lengthy scoring runs.
Latrobe and Belle Vernon both put together 30-0 runs. Latrobe blew past West Mifflin, while Belle Vernon took care of Ringgold.
Games to watch
Thursday’s schedule has several section matchups involving local teams.
In Section 2-6A, Connellsville visits Norwin while Mt. Lebanon plays at Hempfield.
Other games include Gateway at Franklin Regional (Section 1-5A); Kiski Area at Greensburg Salem, McKeesport at Latrobe, and Penn-Trafford at West Mifflin (Section 2-5A); Derry at Burrell (Section 1-4A); Mt. Pleasant at Elizabeth Forward, and South Park at Belle Vernon, Southmoreland at Laurel Highlands, and Yough at Ringgold (Section 3-4A); GCC at South Allegheny, and Shady Side Academy at Ligonier Valley (Section 2-3A); Riverview at Jeannette (Section 4-2A); and Monessen at Mapletown (Section 1-A).
Points of interest
Only four Westmoreland teams were averaging 50 or more points per game: Burrell (59.7), GCC (59.0), Norwin (57.5) and Penn-Trafford (56.0). Conversely, six are averaging 40 or less: Jeannette (38.1), Franklin Regional (37.0), Mt. Pleasant (32.2), Ligonier Valley (30.0) and Derry (24.3).
