Westmoreland County girls soccer notebook: 11 area teams advance to playoffs

The WPIAL will release playoff brackets around 1 p.m. Wednesday on Trib HSSN.

The local field of teams is set at 11. They are: Norwin (14-2), Penn-Trafford (9-6-1) and Latrobe (8-6) in Class 4A; Franklin Regional (14-3) and Kiski Area (7-3) in 3A; Belle Vernon (13-4-1), Burrell (9-5-2), Mt. Pleasant (13-4-1), Southmoreland (7-9-1) and Yough (7-10) in 2A; and Greensburg Central Catholic (3-7) in A.

The postseason is scheduled to start, at least for some teams, Saturday.

Higher seeds will have home games for the first round and, pending a win, the quarterfinals.

The WPIAL finals are Oct. 30-31 at Highmark Stadium.

Streak continues

Despite low roster numbers and only playing section games, Greensburg Central Catholic kept its two-decades-plus-long streak of WPIAL playoff appearances intact.

The Centurions have qualified 28 straight times.

The streak was in jeopardy toward the end of the regular season.

GCC finished tied for fourth place with Ellis School at 3-7 in Section 1-A. A 2-1 win for the Centurions over Ellis in the third game of the season carried a lot of value. The teams split, and so they both qualify for the postseason.

Point blank

Franklin Regional and Belle Vernon have something in common: six straight wins, all via shutout — a wave of momentum for both going into the playoffs.

Goal for a goalie

Yough has one of the better goalkeepers in the area in senior Carly Fitzgibbons.

But coach Rob Broadwater let her out of the cage, so to speak, in a game last week and she beat the opposing keeper.

Fitzgibbons played in the midfield and scored a goal as the Cougars defeated Ligonier Valley, 10-1.

“She’s a hard charger,” Broadwater said. “We let her out to play the field for a bit, and she dribbled through several players and scored.

“This is not her only goal. She has three this season and has scored at least one goal each of her four years.”

Senior moment

Greensburg Central Catholic has only two seniors on its light roster.

But both made the most of senior night. Jayla Peterson and Evelyn Campbell both scored a goal in a 5-2 loss to Winchester Thurston.

Osloskys out

Barring a last-minute appeal, Penn-Trafford will be without two starters in the playoffs.

Twin sisters Emilie and Ava Oslosky are not eligible for the postseason because of their transfer from The Kiski School.

Ava Oslosky is a defender and midfielder, and Emilie is a scoring threat at forward.

The girls played at Penn-Trafford for their first two years, spent last year at The Kiski School, then came back to Penn-Trafford.
