Westmoreland County girls soccer notebook: Penn-Trafford successfully battles through injuries

Penn-Trafford has to wonder what it would be like to have a fully healthy lineup, the rotation it should have without unrelenting injuries.

But reality won’t let the Warriors daydream.

“We knew some girls would be out. We have some phenomenal players,” assistant coach Denny Brown said. “The girls who are out are still a big part of this team. They have the same accountability as if they’re still playing. They have done a great job.”

Junior Avery Bosack, sophomore Tori Yurt and sophomore Isabella Rager are out with knee injuries.

Penn-Trafford did not go into a panic. Instead, the scale regained balance because voids were filled quickly when the team welcomed replenishments: Sophomore Aishlinn Connolly, junior Kylee McClintock and seniors Ava Oslosky and Emilie Oslosky came back to the lineup, the first two after injuries and the Oslosky sisters rejoining the team after one season at The Kiski School.

The Warriors have looked strong as they try to find the perfect chemistry. They are 2-2-1 overall and 2-0 in Section 1-4A.

It has been an odd flow with the Warriors as one player goes down and another comes back.

Junior Lauren Francis also has missed time with a hamstring injury. Senior Miley Currie is expected back after knee surgery, possibly this season, as could be the case with Yurt.

Getting some of the injured girls back for a late-season push or playoff run would be ideal.

“We hope so,” Brown said.

Yurt showed flashes of her talent as a freshman, much like another ninth grader is this season, Ellie Lebe.

Lebe has been a goal-scoring threat since she first took the field. Against Hempfield on Monday, she scored twice in the first five minutes en route to a hat trick.

“We kind of knew what they could do,” Brown said. “You can usually see a special group coming up, and these girls are.”

Emilie Oslosky, Connolly, Lebe and Morgan Spudy made national tournaments in the offseason while competing with their cup teams.

Brown is the lead man for the team for about two weeks because head coach Jimmy Mastroianni is out of the country for his job.

Cougars win

The Kiski School started a girls soccer program last season and struggled as it acclimated to generalized newness. The Cougars were winless in four games with a nine-girl roster with light experience.

The team took a big step in a short time though, starting this season with a bang. They opened with a victory, blanking Perkiomen School, 4-0, at the Hill Jamboree.

Two girls from Westmoreland County play on the team: Elin Bash (Norwin) and Lexie Botti (Penn-Trafford).

Bash had a hat trick in the opener.

Whole lotta goals

Local teams opened the week with a barrage of offense.

Goalkeepers were busy Monday night.

Yough beat East Allegheny, 13-0.

There were three 11-0 scores: Penn-Trafford handled Hempfield, Latrobe flattened Woodland Hills and Freeport blanked Valley.

Outside of the county, Bentworth beat California, 14-2, and OLSH topped South Side, 10-4.

Cause and effect

Belle Vernon girls soccer doesn’t just plod through its schedule. The Leopards try to make games events.

When they played Ringgold last week, they took time to honor late Ringgold standout Kaitlyn “Moe” Rosensteel, who died in 2019.

When BVA played McGuffey, the team raised money for its cystic fibrosis foundation awareness game.

Games to watch

The first wave of section play continues Wednesday with a number of quality county games to watch. They include Latrobe at Norwin (Section 1-4A), Elizabeth Forward at Greensburg Salem (4-3A), Belle Vernon at Keystone Oaks (1-2A) and Southmoreland at Yough (4-2A).

Free kicks

Mt. Pleasant leads Westmoreland County in goals with 22, Norwin is just behind with 21 and Southmoreland has 20. … Mt. Pleasant and Burrell have allowed only two goals all season. … Jeannette, battling the recurring theme of low roster numbers, has yet to play a game.
