The new WPIAL girls soccer season begins Friday, but the first big event to watch will be Saturday at Ringgold.

The fourth annual Moe Rosensteel Memorial Kickoff Classic will feature four games at Joe Montana Stadium.

The schedule is as follows: Franklin Regional vs. Thomas Jefferson (girls) at 10 a.m., North Catholic vs. Latrobe (girls) at noon, Elizabeth Forward vs. Ringgold (boys) at 2 p.m.; Allderdice vs. Ringgold (girls) at 4.

Restocked Warriors

Penn-Trafford will have four girls back who either missed time last season or were not on the team.

Aishlinn Connolly and Kylee McClintock are back from injuries, while Ava Oslosky and Emilie Oslosky returned to Penn-Trafford after one year at The Kiski School.

The Oslosky sisters are both committed to Seton Hill.

The Warriors will have three key players out with knee injuries, however: Avery Bosack, Tori Yurt and Isabella Rager. All three are recovering from ACL surgery.

Miley Currie, meantime, should be back at the end of September after having knee surgery. Currie is a Cal (Pa.) commit.

Ranking ‘em

Only two teams from Westmoreland County are in the TribLive preseason rankings. Both are in Class 2A.

Mt. Pleasant is No. 2, while Burrell is No. 3. Burrell beat Mt. Pleasant in last year’s WPIAL quarterfinals.

The preseason No. 1 teams are Peters Township (4A), South Fayette (3A), Quaker Valley (2A) and Springdale (A).

New turf

Southmoreland is getting new artificial turf at Russ Grimm Field and, as it stands now, a girls soccer game could be the first live event on the new surface.

The Scotties girls will host Bentworth at 7 p.m. on Aug. 27.

Boys soccer plays Greensburg Salem at 7 :30 p.m. on Aug. 28.

The first football game on the surface could be Sept. 5 against Laurel Highlands.
