The Latrobe girls soccer all-time goals record has a new name next to it. The ink from the former record holder barely was dry.
Senior forward Annalyse Bauer needed three goals and poured in four — all in the second half — in Monday’s 8-0 win over Armstrong to move past Robin Reilly with 62 career goals.
A recent alum, Reilly’s short-lived mark of 61 scores was set last season before she headed off to play at West Virginia.
Bauer, a skilled forward, had 58 goals coming into the week.
Latrobe coach Jamie Campbell said Bauer deserved the record.
“Annalyse sets a phenomenal standard of work rate, dedication and commitment for her team, and we’re so proud she was able to earn this achievement and reward herself for all the hard work,” Campbell said. “She has grown as a player and a leader over her time with the program and the dedication to her game shows. Her team also took such joy as they fought hard to support her in her feat.”
Breaking the record was bittersweet for Bauer, an Eastern Michigan commit.
“It means so much to have this opportunity,” Bauer said. “Robin was one my best friends on the team, and she definitely helped me get some of the goals I have.
“It feels so great to be able to break the record and be surrounded by my teammates. It means so much to have done it at home with my family and all of our fans that came out tonight.”
Panthers surging
Franklin Regional (7-2) has won six of seven games, with all the wins coming via shutout.
One of the wins came against No. 4 Montour, a 3-0 clean sheet for goalkeeper Addison Ayres, who has seven shutouts behind a dependable back line.
Senior Allyssa Velasquez has powered the offense, scoring five goals last week and two more in a 4-0 win over Elizabeth Forward on Monday, whereas Grace Copeland has been a pillar on defense and recorded her first career points (a goal and an assist) against Montour. She connected on a 35-yard free kick to cap the scoring.
Velasquez leads the Panthers with nine goals and has three multi-goal games.
Reese Regelski, a freshman, has six goals.
Depth perception
Norwin played its best game of the season so far Monday in a 3-0 victory over Penn-Trafford. What stood out — and what continues to stand out with this team — is the deep bench coach Ashley DeVito has.
Norwin played 17 girls in the victory, and three girls scored, giving the team 13 goal scorers for the season.
“I want our girls to see that if they go out and do your job, there is always someone behind you doing her job, too,” DeVito said. “I also want them to know that, on any given night, you can lose your job. I want the girls to earn (playing time).”
The constantly fresh lineup allows the Knights to be aggressive and structured on both ends of the field.
“We try to keep our legs fresh,” Norwin senior midfielder Nicole Bown said. “Let’s get someone in when we need to switch out. We’re always ready to make a change.”
Yurt returns
Penn-Trafford sophomore Tori Yurt returned to the lineup last week for the first time since last September — in the Warriors’ sixth game of last season — when she tore the ACL and MCL in her right knee.
Yurt made an immediate impact, netting a goal in an 8-0 win over Woodland Hills.
“The hardest part of the injury was the whole mental side because you don’t really know what your life is without soccer,” Yurt told UPMC.com.
“What I’ve grown most out of this injury is don’t take anything for granted because you don’t know how lucky you are to be able to do the things you love.”
It is unclear how much Yurt will play this season, as her initial plans were to sit out until next season. She played about 40 minutes Monday in a 3-0 loss to Norwin.
Gesinski sits out
Mt. Pleasant standout Morgan Gesinski missed a game last week because of an ankle sprain. The Robert Morris commit and career 100-goal scorer came back strong this week, scoring a hat trick in an 8-0 win over Southmoreland.
Rankings check
Norwin (5-2) moved into this week’s Trib HSSN rankings, taking over the No. 5 spot after Canon-McMillan dropped out of the Class 4A top five.
The top Class 4A teams are Peters Township (1), Seneca Valley (2), North Allegheny (3) and Pine- Richland (4).
There was some shuffling in 2A, with Mt. Pleasant (6-1-1) dropping one spot to No. 4. Quaker Valley remains No. 1, with Burrell No. 2, South Park No. 3 and Freeport No. 5.
Streak snapped
Hempfield snapped a 10-game losing streak with a 4-0 victory over Woodland Hills.
