Westmoreland County high school football matchups for 2024 Week 9

Class 6A
Norwin (2-7, 0-5) at Mt. Lebanon (2-7, 2-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Mt. Lebanon Stadium, Mt. Lebanon
Last week’s results: Canon-McMillan 27, Norwin 26; Mt. Lebanon 42, Hempfield 20
Last year’s meeting: Did not play
Norwin has sunk to the bottom of the conference after losing seven straight following a 2-0 start. The Knights pushed Canon-McMillan to the limit last week as Tristyn Tavares, hampered by a sore knee, went 24 of 37 for 259 yards and two touchdowns and Giovani Rothrauff had a career night with 162 yards on 33 carries. … Mt. Lebanon stayed in the playoff race (top four of seven qualify) with a big fourth quarter against Hempfield, which was looking to clinch a playoff spot. Pat Smith ran for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and Sam McCauley scored twice, including an 88-yard kick-return score. Both teams are allowing more than 30 points a game.
Class 5A Big East Conference
Armstrong (2-7, 0-5) at Franklin Regional (6-3, 3-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Franklin Regional Panther Stadium, Murrysville
Last week’s results: Penn-Trafford 35, Armstrong 14; Woodland Hills 27, Franklin Regional 17
Last year’s meeting: Did not play
Armstrong has dropped seven consecutive games after starting the season 2-0. QB Jaydon Oliver has completed 120 of 227 passes for 1,485 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. WR Kyan Kline has 39 catches for 670 yards. … Franklin Regional has dropped consecutive first-place battles and looks to right the ship this week. RB Kyle Dupill has rushed for more than 100 yards in every game and has gained 1,586 yards and scored 14 touchdowns. QB Chase Lemke has completed 67 of 147 passes for 1,150 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Class 4A Big Six Conference
5-Belle Vernon (4-3, 3-1) at Trinity (4-5, 3-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Hiller Field, Washington
Last week’s results: Belle Vernon 49, Ringgold 7; Trinity 38, Laurel Highlands 3
Last year’s meeting: Did not play
Second place is on the line in this key battle in the Big Six. Belle Vernon has won three consecutive games and is averaging 54.7 points. Senior RB Kole Doppelheuer has rushed for 553 yards, caught 16 passes for 318 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. QB Curtis Wade is starting to find his groove. He has completed 49 of 79 passes for 841 yards and 11 touchdowns. … Trinity is led by dual-threat QB Jonah Williamson, who has rushed for 523 yards and completed 60 of 130 passes for 644 yards. Williamson has scored 10 touchdowns. RB Nick Mauro has rushed for 639 yards and scored six touchdowns. Trinity has won two consecutive games. Both teams had a tough nonconference schedule.
Class 3A Interstate Conference
Derry (3-6, 0-4) at Yough (2-7, 0-4)
7 p.m. Friday, Cougar Mountain Stadium, Herminie
Last week’s results: Mt. Pleasant 31, Derry 14; Greensburg Salem 37, Yough 8
Last year’s meeting: Derry 22, Yough 21
A matchup of teams that played together in the Class 2A Allegheny Conference last year. Both are looking for their first conference win. Yough has dropped seven straight, Derry four in a row. … Aidan Shaffer caught a 65-yard touchdown from Raidon Kuroda last week for Yough. Karson Weiers had a 53-yard grab for a score for the Trojans.
Elizabeth Forward (6-3, 4-0) at Mt. Pleasant (5-4, 3-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Viking Stadium, Mt. Pleasant
Last week’s results: Elizabeth Forward 31, Southmoreland 3; Mt. Pleasant 31, Derry 14
Last year’s meeting: Elizabeth Forward 39, Mt. Pleasant 25
Elizabeth Forward proved it might be the best team in the conference, wiping out Southmoreland and limiting the Scotties’ potent offense. Charlie Nigut ran for 140 yards and three touchdowns on 29 carries, and Ryan Messina threw for 185 yards. The Warriors scored 31 unanswered points. … Mt. Pleasant moved closer to a playoff berth as Jarett Garn accounted for three touchdowns, including a 56-yard reception from Cole Chatfield, who was 7 of 10 for 210 yards and two scores. Brody Hutter blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown.
Southmoreland (7-2, 3-1) at Greensburg Salem (6-3, 2-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Offutt Field, Greensburg
Last week’s results: Elizabeth Forward 31, Southmoreland 3; Greensburg Salem 37, Yough 8
Last year’s meeting: Southmoreland 46, Greensburg Salem 12
Southmoreland was slowed substantially by Elizabeth Forward in a first-place clash last week, producing only an opening field goal and not finding the end zone. The Scotties, who can clinch a playoff spot with a win, are averaging 34.4 points. Freshman quarterback Anthony Smith has thrown for 1,842 yards and 21 touchdowns. Elliot Premus has 45 catches for 460 yards. … Greensburg Salem inched closer to a playoff berth with an impressive win over Yough as Brody Chismar, now the full-time starter, threw for 88 yards and a score and rushed for 97 yards. Dom Rosensteel had a rushing TD and an interception. Quietly, the Golden Lions have shown multiple offensive weapons.
Class 2A Allegheny Conference
Apollo-Ridge (0-8, 0-5) at Ligonier Valley (3-6, 1-4)
7 p.m. Friday, Weller Field, Ligonier
Last week’s results: South Park 34, Apollo-Ridge 10; Steel Valley 53, Ligonier Valley 7
Last year’s meeting: Steel Valley 35, Ligonier Valley 0
These teams are looking to finish the season on a positive note. Apollo-Ridge has dropped eight consecutive games but has played well the past two weeks. QB Alex Clawson has completed 123 of 222 passes for 1,525 yards and 12 touchdowns. Logan Schrock has 26 catches for 327 yards, and Gage Wingard 22 catches for 304. … Ligonier Valley has been on a string of win a game and then drop the next two. If that plays out this week, the Rams should win. All six losses have been to playoff teams. RB John Jablunovsky has rushed for 1,058 yards and scored 12 touchdowns. QB Bowie Schreyer has completed 41 of 86 passes for 702 yards and seven touchdowns.
Class A Black Hills Conference
5-Monessen (7-2, 3-2) at Cornell (7-2, 3-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Frank Letteri Stadium, Coraopolis
Last week’s results: Bishop Canevin 56, Monessen 20; Cornell 46, Chartiers-Houston 14
Last year’s meeting: Cornell 20, Monessen 6
Third place is on the line in this battle. The Greyhounds look to rebound after a tough loss at Bishop Canevin. Junior RB TyVaughn Kershaw has rushed for 1,321 yards and 27 touchdowns. He has 11 catches for 232 yards. QB Dennis Hawkins has completed 49 of 89 passes for 938 yards and 11 scores. … The Raiders are led by RB Walter Clarit, who has rushed for 916 yards and 15 touchdowns. WR Khylil Johnson has 24 catches for 389 yards, rushed for 545 yards and scored 19 touchdowns.
Class A Eastern Conference
Greensburg Central Catholic (5-2, 4-1) at Leechburg (8-1, 5-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Veterans Memorial Stadium, Leechburg
Last week’s results: Greensburg Central Catholic (did not play); Leechburg 57, Brentwood 34
Last year’s meeting: Greensburg Central Catholic 42, Leechburg 7
Frazier hit GCC with a last-minute postponement last week due to a shortage of players, and it does not look like the game will be made up, so GCC will get a forfeit win. The Centurions have won four in a row and have clinched a playoff spot. … Leechburg has been one of the highest-scoring teams in Class A with its only loss coming against vaunted Clairton, 44-7. The Blue Devils are averaging 40.7 points. Last week, Tim Andrasy ran for 190 yards and two touchdowns, Jayden Floyd threw for 174 yards and three touchdowns and Jake Cummings had 12 catches for 107 yards.
Jeannette (6-3, 3-3) at Riverview (3-5, 2-4)
Noon Saturday, Riverside Park, Oakmont
Last week’s results: Jeannette 42, Springdale 0; Clairton 84, Riverview 0
Last year’s meeting: Jeannette 42, Riverview 22
Jeannette is trying to get into the playoffs, and a third straight win could go a long way. Nick Mendoza ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on only five carries last week, while Kymon’e Brown threw two TD passes and returned a punt for a score. … Riverview was the latest victim of Clairton’s air-tight defense. The Bears led 76-0 at the half and the third and fourth quarters were shortened to eight minutes. The Raiders had 42 yards and two first downs and gave away eight turnovers. Riverview’s wins are against Valley, Springdale and Frazier. The Raiders have lost all 10 past games to Jeannette.
Nonconference
Hempfield (3-6) at Gateway (3-6)
7 p.m. Friday, Pete Antimarino Stadium, Monroeville
Last week’s results: Mt. Lebanon 42, Hempfield 20; Latrobe 28, Gateway 27
Last year’s meeting: Gateway 63, Hempfield 21
Both teams are looking to end the season on a positive note after dropping games last week. Hempfield is led by QB Dom Detruf, who has completed 105 of 207 passes for 1,438 yards and 12 touchdowns. WR Jack Kopas has 34 catches for 482 yards. … Gateway has dropped three consecutive games, and three of its six losses have been by two points or less. The Gators have dropped consecutive 28-27 decisions. QB Elvis Koutsakis has completed 118 of 194 passes for 1,369 yards and 13 touchdowns. Shawn Moorefield has 52 catches for 701 yards, and RB Amari Gans has scored 14 touchdowns. The Gators, who remain alive for a wild-card berth, allowed four touchdown passes last week.
