Here’s a look at the high school football matchups for Week 2 in Westmoreland County:

Nonconference

Apollo-Ridge (1-1) at Greensburg Central Catholic (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Centurion Stadium, Carbon

Last week: Jeannette 35, Apollo-Ridge 22; Greensburg Central Catholic 40, Mt. Pleasant 7

Last year’s meeting: No contest (weather)

• The teams are hoping to play a full game this time. Last year’s matchup was suspended after one half because of lightning and rain. GCC was up 28-21 at the time. Apollo-Ridge gave up big plays last week and lost to Jeannette. Quarterback Alex Clawson had a busy night as he completed 19 of 30 passes for 254 yards and a touchdown. Coach John Skiba was a lineman at Pitt. … Greensburg Central Catholic rolled to its first win of the season against favored Class 3A opponent Mt. Pleasant. Samir Crosby ran for 121 yards and a touchdown and caught seven passes for 147 yards and two scores. Bobby Smithnosky had his best game at quarterback, going 14 of 22 for 223 yards and three TDs.

Belle Vernon (0-1) at Central Valley (0-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Sarge Alberts Stadium, Monaca

Last week: Aliquippa 42, Belle Vernon 7; Thomas Jefferson 37, Central Valley 14

Last year’s meeting: Belle Vernon 23, Central Valley 17

• The scene shifts from “The Beach” to “The Sarge” as Central Valley looks to avenge a loss from last season. Belle Vernon, which played two scrimmages before its opener, pulled even with perennial power Aliquippa at 7-7 early but couldn’t stop the Quips after the first quarter. Chace Petrosky was a bright spot as he returned a kickoff 87 yards for a score. The Leopards allowed big plays through the air. The Quips averaged 23.4 yards per pass completion. … Central Valley, a voluntary merger between Monaca and Center that began in 2008, jumped out to a 14-0 lead over Thomas Jefferson before allowing 37 unanswered points. The Warriors had trouble stopping the Jaguars’ power running game. Ethan Bosco had a rushing touchdown, and Lucas Gerovac caught a scoring throw from Braddock Ambrose in the loss.

Beth-Center (0-2) at Monessen (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Monessen

Last week: Leechburg 58, Beth-Center 6; Monessen 34, West Greene 18

Last year’s meeting: Monessen 56, Beth-Center 30

• These former Tri-County South Conference rivals have had a few battles, but this game looks one-sided in favor of the Greyhounds. The Bulldogs have been outscored 92-25 by two Eastern Conference foes that are not Clairton, Jeannette or Greensburg Central Catholic. Teagan Veatch caught a touchdown pass last week against Leechburg. … Monessen got three touchdowns from Tavian Taylor, including a 50-yard interception return, and Kaier Payne scored on a blocked punt and fumble return at West Greene. The Hounds led 28-6 at halftime.

Derry (1-1) at Deer Lakes (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Lancer Stadium, West Deer

Last week: Freeport 49, Derry 6; South Park 35, Deer Lakes 14

Last year’s meeting: Deer Lakes 34, Derry 12

• Both teams are coming off losses to good teams and are looking to get back on track. The Trojans had trouble slowing down the Freeport running game. Max Doherty scored on a 17-yard run for the Trojans. … Reigning WPIAL Class 2A champion South Park scored two times in the fourth quarter to ice the win against Deer Lakes. Luca Mangieri and Ryan Love scored touchdowns in the loss. … Despite last year’s loss, Derry has won three of its five games vs. Deer Lakes.

Greensburg Salem (1-1) at Valley (0-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Valley Memorial Stadium, New Kensington

Last week: Greensburg Salem 17, Ligonier Valley 14; Riverview 35, Valley 0

Last year’s meeting: Greensburg Salem 50, Valley 14

• Brody Chismar threw for two touchdowns, and the defense clamped down in Greensburg Salem’s tight win over Ligonier Valley. Jackson Stevey and Max Topper had scoring receptions in the Golden Lions’ first win of the season. Ligonier Valley was missing its kicker, so it had to attempt 2-point conversions and missed on both tries. Greensburg Salem limited the Rams to 150 rushing yards. The win was No. 719 all time for the Golden Lions. … Valley struggled in its opener when it was held to minus-17 yards of offense against Southmoreland. The Vikings played close early with Riverview last Saturday afternoon before the Raiders let loose. Valley has been outscored 75-0 in two weeks. The Vikings have dropped 17 in a row.

Kiski Area (1-1) at Class 6A No. 3 Hempfield (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Spartan Stadium, Greensburg

Last week: Norwin 42, Kiski Area 7; Hempfield 31, Franklin Regional 14

Last year’s meeting: Hempfield 31, Kiski Area 29

• Sawyer Leuthold kicked a 26-yard field goal with 38 seconds left last year as Hempfield crept past the Cavaliers. Dom Detruf threw for 247 yards in the win. He has been around 200 yards passing in both games this season. He threw for 193 and a score last week, and Aidan Stinebiser racked up his second straight 100-yard rushing performance. The Spartans ran the ball with authority in the second half. He tallied 103 yards and two TDs on 17 carries. Jack Kopas had a pick-6, and Xavier Smith collected two sacks and an interception. Leuthold made a 40-yard field goal. … Kiski Area failed to slow down Norwin quarterback Tristyn Tavares and the Knights’ running game. The Cavaliers didn’t score until the fourth quarter when Lucas Vacanti caught a short pass from Landyn Artman, who was 10 of 19 for 101 yards in the loss. Kiski Area won its opener against Knoch, 21-0. New Cavaliers coach Colyn Haugh is a Franklin Regional alum.

Laurel Highlands (2-0) at Southmoreland (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Russ Grimm Field, Alverton

Last week: Laurel Highlands 12, Ambridge 7; Southmoreland 49, East Allegheny 7

Last year’s meeting: Southmoreland 49, Laurel Highlands 13

• Two unbeaten teams collide in a 4A-3A nonconference battle. The Mustangs defeated rival Uniontown in Week Zero and rallied to beat Ambridge. The only points they allowed were a kickoff return against the Bridgers. Nicholas Crouch and Gio Guerriere have scored two touchdowns each this season. … The Scotties have outscored their two opponents 89-7. Makel Darnell scored three touchdowns, and Jackson Mickens scored twice against East Allegheny. QB Dawson Wolfe tossed four touchdowns, completing 8 of 14 passes for 116 yards, and rushed for a score, making Scotties fans forget about Anthony Smith, who transferred after his freshman season.

Ligonier Valley (0-2) at Jeannette (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday, McKee Stadium, Jeannette

Last week: Greensburg Salem 14, Ligonier Valley 12; Jeannette 35, Apollo-Ridge 22

Last year’s meeting: Jeannette 34, Ligonier Valley 27

• Missed conversions cost the Rams a possible win against Greensburg Salem. Anthony Petalino and Levi Foust threw touchdown passes to Greyson Daugherty. The first was a 33-yard pass from Petalino, a running back. … Jeannette bounced back from a Week Zero loss to defeat Apollo-Ridge. Jace Powell rushed for one score and caught another from Kymon’e Brown, who also threw a touchdown to Hunter Schaeffer. Brown completed 8 of 16 passes for 180 yards.

Mt. Pleasant (1-1) at Burrell (0-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Buccaneer Stadium, Lower Burrell

Last week: Greensburg Central Catholic 40, Mt. Pleasant 7; Shady Side Academy 56, Burrell 26.

Last year’s meeting: Mt. Pleasant 23, Burrell 13

• Both teams are coming off tough losses. The Vikings played without their top two running backs: Steve Predanja and Mason Eicher. Their offense struggled against the GCC defense. … Burrell quarterback Antonio Perkins scored four touchdowns and rushed for 174 yards in the loss to Shady Side Academy. The Bucs’ defense had trouble stopping Shady Side’s offense. … Mt. Pleasant has a 9-3 lead in the all-time series against Burrell, which dates to 1972 when both schools were members of the Keystone Conference. The Bucs’ last victory over the Vikings came in 2018.

Penn-Trafford (2-0) at Class 5A No. 5 Moon (2-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Tigers Stadium, Moon

Last week: Penn-Trafford 26, Mt. Lebanon 18; Moon 41, Montour 13

Last year’s meeting: Penn-Trafford 14, Moon 7

• Penn-Trafford played sound defense and built a 13-0 halftime lead before holding back Mt. Lebanon behind a strong passing attack. First-year starting quarterback Nate Desmond was 15 of 23 for 222 yards and two touchdowns, both to Nick Ponko. Cody Yacamelli, the younger brother of Wisconsin running back Cade Yacamelli, ran for a touchdown in the win. Ponko caught eight passes for 151 yards and two scores. The Warriors piled up more than 300 yards of offense for the second straight week. … Moon powered its way to 2-0 with a 21-point second quarter against Montour. The Tigers trailed 6-0. Antoine Arnett ran for 161 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Andrew Cross threw TD passes to Braeden Stewart, Myles Turner and Jacob Warnagis. Moon edged past Trinity in Week Zero, 14-13.

Upper St. Clair (2-0) at Franklin Regional (0-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Panther Stadium, Murrysville

Last week: Upper St. Clair 48, Canon-McMillan 0; Hempfield 31, Franklin Regional 14

Last year’s meeting: Upper St. Clair 45, Franklin Regional 7

• Upper St. Clair has rolled to victories against Mt. Lebanon and Canon-McMillan. The Panthers were machine-like last week as they showcased their passing game and kicker. Ethan Hellman threw for 281 yards and three touchdowns on 16-of-20 passing, and Drew Sanderson caught two touchdown passes totaling 113 yards. Jacobo Echeverria Lozano made four field goals, from 24, 23, 38 and 39 yards. He is the 10th-ranked kicker in the nation by Kohl’s Kicking Camps. … Franklin Regional has been hampered by injuries and suspensions and was missing several key players last week against Hempfield. Still, it was 14-14 at halftime as Jet Taylor scored on a 30-yard run and Austin McClure caught a 19-yard TD pass from Dom Devola. Taylor has been a workhorse back. He ran for 153 yards on 20 carries last week. Taylor has 260 yards in two games.

Yough (2-0) at Ringgold (1-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Joe Montana Stadium, Monongahela

Last week: Yough 42, Charleroi 7; Ringgold 61, Indiana 14

Last year’s meeting: Ringgold 21, Yough 19

• These teams played a tight one in 2024, and the same could occur Friday. Both teams are coming off big wins. John Gergely rushed for three touchdowns and Ryan Sarver two in the win against Charleroi. Gergely has rushed 256 yards this season and quarterback Aiden Shaffer 196. Ryan Sarver had nine catches for 87 yards. … Former Monessen quarterback Dennis Hawkins threw two touchdowns against South Allegheny. The Rams crushed Indiana last week.
