Westmoreland County high school football matchups for 2025 Week 3

Here’s a look at the don’t-miss matchups for Week 3 in Westmoreland County:
Class 6A
No. 3 Hempfield (3-0) at No. 2 North Allegheny (3-0)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Newman Stadium, McCandless
Last week: Hempfield 43, Kiski Area 10; North Allegheny 35, Penn Hills 0
Last year’s meeting: North Allegheny 42, Hempfield 14
A litmus test for Hempfield more than North Allegheny, this is the conference opener for both top-five teams. … Hempfield clubbed Kiski Area as Dom Detruf continued to play well at quarterback. He was 14 of 17 for 214 yards and four touchdowns against Kiski Area. Jack Kopas had two TD grabs. Carden Lippmann and Andrew Jones each had an interception. … The Spartans are in position to score a signature win but will go against a Tigers team that has posted back-to-back shutouts. Luke Rohan rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown on 20 carries for North Allegheny against Penn Hills. Brady Brinkley is another poised quarterback. Last year, the Tigers scored 28 points in the second half to roll past the Spartans.
No. 4 Norwin (2-1) at No. 5 Seneca Valley (1-2)
7 p.m. Friday, NexTier Stadium, Harmony
Last week: Norwin 35, Latrobe 0; Pine-Richland 49, Seneca Valley 20
Last year’s meeting: Seneca Valley 26, Norwin 6
Norwin righted the ship after a tough opening-season loss to Penn-Trafford with two impressive wins against Kiski Area and Latrobe. QB Tristyn Tavares combined for four scores against Latrobe, running for two touchdowns and throwing two others while completing 9 0f 12 passes for 133 yards. RB Giovanni Rothrauff ran for his third consecutive 100-yard game. … Seneca Valley is coming off a loss to Pine-Richland. QB Andrew Loebig has thrown six touchdown passes and compiled 603 yards.
Class 5A Big East Conference
Franklin Regional (0-3) at Latrobe (1-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Latrobe Memorial Stadium, Latrobe
Last week: Upper St. Clair 49, Franklin Regional 6; Norwin 35, Latrobe 0
Last year’s meeting: Franklin Regional 3, Latrobe 0
These two teams have been involved in some great battles in the past four years. Both are coming off losses. Both teams also played Plum — Latrobe won 42-35 in triple overtime and Franklin Regional fell 42-13. … Franklin Regional’s Jet Taylor rushed for 251 yards and two touchdowns last week. … Sophomore RB A.J. Yeboah is Latrobe’s leading rusher and has scored three touchdowns, all against Plum.
Class 2A Allegheny Conference
Ligonier Valley (0-3) at Shady Side Academy (2-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Grandizio Athletic Complex, Fox Chapel
Last week: Jeannette 31, Ligonier Valley 0; Shady Side Academy did not play
Last year’s meeting: Ligonier Valley 40, Shady Side Academy 28
Ligonier Valley will go for its first win of the season against the Bulldogs, who sat idle after forfeiting their game against Clairton because of a “rash of injuries.” Shady Side Academy said it only had nine healthy players and could not play the Bears. … Ligonier Valley moved the ball but could not get into the end zone at Jeannette. The Rams allowed 373 yards of offense, including 234 through the air. Levi Foust and Boden Schreyer shared snaps at quarterback. … In Week 1, Shady Side Academy defeated Burrell, 56-26, a week after coming back to beat Greensburg Central Catholic, 28-26. Against Burrell, sophomore QB Javon Johnston threw for 357 yards and four touchdowns and also ran for four touchdowns.
Class A Black Hills Conference
Monessen (3-0) at Serra Catholic (0-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Eagle Stadium, McKeesport
Last week: Monessen 20, Beth-Center 3; Leechburg 26, Serra Catholic 0
Last year’s meeting: Monessen 20, Serra Catholic 14
Monessen remained undefeated and took momentum into its conference opener with a win over Beth-Center in its home opener. Kaier Payne passed for 193 yards and three touchdowns, including a 70-yard bomb to Tavian Taylor and a 55-yard strike to Jayvionne Jeffries. The Greyhounds trailed 3-0 at halftime … Serra Catholic has been outscored 105-0 over the last two weeks. The Eagles lost 79-0 to Clairton in Week 1. California defeated them in Week Zero, 44-14. This is one of five home games for the Eagles.
Class A Eastern Conference
No. 2 Clairton (1-1) at Greensburg Central Catholic (2-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Centurion Stadium, Carbon
Last week: Clairton did not play; Greensburg Central Catholic 35, Apollo-Ridge 16
Last year’s meeting: Clairton 47, Greensburg Central Catholic 0
Clairton marches into GCC steaming after Shady Side Academy chose not to play last week because of too many injuries. Bears QB Jeff Thompson was 7 of 7 for 219 yards and seven touchdowns against Serra Catholic in Week 1. He is 26 of 38 for 445 yards and nine touchdowns in two games. Wideout Donte Wright had three catches for 100 yards and two scores two weeks ago. … GCC rallied in the second half last week to defeat Apollo-Ridge. Jerry Davis had a 70-yard interception return for a touchdown, and sophomore QB Bobby Smithnosky was 13 for 16 for 150 yards and three touchdowns.
No. 5 Jeannette (2-1) at Frazier (2-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Commodore Field, Perryopolis
Last week: Jeannette 31, Ligonier Valley 0; Frazier 31, Carmichaels 14
Last year’s meeting: Jeannette 43, Frazier 24
Jeannette’s passing game was explosive in its home opener as Kymon’e Brown threw for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Two went to his top target, Jayce Powell, who had five catches for 122 yards and a 75-yard score that went viral when it hit social media. Nick Mendoza scored twice, on a rush and reception. … Frazier opens conference play with momentum after its second home win of the season. Derek Diamond ran for 175 yards and a TD on 25 carries. Brady Secrest had two rushing scores for the Commodores.
Nonconference
Ambridge (0-3) at Mt. Pleasant (1-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Mt. Pleasant Area Stadium, Mt. Pleasant
Last week: Hopewell 49, Ambridge 2; Burrell 28, Mt. Pleasant 21
Last year’s meeting: Ambridge 28, Mt. Pleasant 10
Ambridge has only scored 16 points in three games, including a kickoff return. Daevon Cain and Martese Priest have scored touchdowns for the Bridgers. … The Vikings look to rebound after two losses. RB Stephen Predajna returned to the lineup last week after sitting out with an injury. The Vikings have been saddled with injuries. QB Dane Firmstone has completed 15 of 32 passes for 299 yards.
Burrell (1-2) at Derry (2-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Trojan Stadium, Derry
Last week: Burrell 28, Mt. Pleasant 21; Derry 24, Deer Lakes 21
Last year’s meeting: Derry 32, Burrell 13
Burrell snapped a five-game losing streak as it rallied late to knock off banged-up Mt. Pleasant. Derry also staged a thrilling comeback against Deer Lakes. … Antonio Perkins ran for 142 yards and all four touchdowns to lead the Bucs against Mt. Pleasant. Burrell trailed by a touchdown heading to the fourth quarter. … Derry scored 15 points in the fourth to get past the Lancers, with Noah Stough grabbing an 11-yard touchdown from Anthony Sacco with 11 seconds left for the win. The Trojans erupted for 26 second-half points last year to down the Bucs. Dylan Pitzer is a difference maker on defense. … Derry leads 4-6 in the all-time series, which dates to 1982 when Derry won by the unusual football score of 11-0. This marks the 70th football season for Derry Area High School following the consolidation of Derry Borough and Derry Township high schools.
Class 4A No. 3 McKeesport (1-2) at Belle Vernon (1-1)
7 p.m. Friday, James Weir Stadium, Rostraver

Last year’s meeting: McKeesport 28, Belle Vernon 7; McKeesport 34, Belle Vernon 11 (playoffs)
After opening the season with a 51-24 win against Delaware Valley, the Tigers dropped contests to Peters Township, 35-0, and Thomas Jefferson, 16-7. RB Kemon Spell has missed most of the last two games with an injury. He rushed for 227 yards and five touchdowns in the opener. … Belle Vernon QB Curtis Wade helped rally his team to a win at Central Valley last week. Wade has completed 21 of 29 passes for 271 yards and two touchdowns. Nick Mihalko has six catches for 121 yards.
Ringgold (2-1) at Greensburg Salem (2-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Offutt Field, Greensburg
Last week: Ringgold 40, Yough 0; Greensburg Salem 26, Valley 10
Last year’s meeting: Greensburg Salem 7, Ringgold 0
Ringgold ended Yough’s quick start with an impressive 40-0 win last Friday. RB Amoni Ward rushed for 240 yards and four touchdowns against Yough. … Greensburg Salem rallied from a 10-0 deficit to defeat Valley. Aden Krug returned an interception 60 yards for a score, and QB Brody Chismar tossed a touchdown pass to Tyrese Lewis.
Southmoreland (3-0) at Blackhawk (1-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Blackhawk Stadium, Beaver Falls
Last week: Southmoreland 54, Laurel Highlands 7; North Catholic 65, Blackhawk 49
Last year’s meeting: Blackhawk 45, Southmoreland 20
Southmoreland was bouncing along at 3-0 last year when it fell to Blackhawk. The Scotties hope to keep their early momentum rolling this time. … The Scotties did all of their scoring in three quarters, including 27 in the third, to blast Laurel Highlands. Dawson Wolfe had his best game at quarterback, passing for 135 yards and two touchdowns and running for three scores. Averyon Darnell, Ty Whoric and Jackson Mickens also scored, and Luke Stinnett and Jake Hull had defensive touchdowns. … Blackhawk was on the wrong end of the WPIAL’s highest scoring game in 24 years as North Catholic and the Cougars combined for 114 points and more than 1,100 yards. For Blackhawk, Brayden McCarthy ran for 298 yards and three touchdowns on 21 carries, and AJ Montgomery added 117 yards and two scores on the ground.
Yough (2-1) at New Castle (2-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Taggart Stadium, New Castle
Last week: Ringgold 40, Yough 0; New Castle 32, Highlands 0
Last year’s meeting: New Castle 27, Yough 7
Yough ran into a buzz saw at Ringgold in its first loss of the season Friday. RB John Gergely rushed for 63 yards against Ringgold and has 333 yards this season. Ryan Sarver has 11 catches for 116 yards. … New Castle has 762 victories, which is third behind Aliquippa (791) and Jeannette (788) in all-time wins in the WPIAL. QB Marino Graham has completed 30 of 53 passes for 401 yards and four touchdowns. WR Kai Cox has nine catches for 154 yards.
