Here’s a look at the don’t-miss matchups for Week 7 in Westmoreland County:
Class 6A
No. 3 Norwin (5-2, 2-1) vs. No. 1 Central Catholic (6-1, 4-0)
8 p.m. Thursday, CMU’s Gesling Stadium, Oakland
Last week: Norwin 33, Hempfield 26; Central Catholic 69, Shaler 7
Last year’s meeting: Central Catholic 59, Norwin 13
This is a showdown for first place in Class 6A. A Norwin victory would create a three-way tie with North Allegheny. … The Knights rallied to defeat Hempfield last week by coming back from a 26-14 deficit. RB Giovanni Rothrauff ran for 178 yards and scored on runs of 67 and 31 yards. QB Tristyn Tavares played on a gimpy ankle. … Central Catholic had nine players score touchdowns against Shaler. Aiden Nasidka scored twice on a 30-yard pass and a 75-yard kickoff return. Freshman Ty Kovalcin, whose dad, Derek, played for Norwin, scored a touchdown in the win.
Seneca Valley (2-5, 0-3) at No. 4 Hempfield (4-3, 1-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Bill Abraham Field at Spartans Stadium, Greensburg
Last week: Canon-McMillan 33, Seneca Valley 29; Norwin 33, Hempfield 26
Last year’s meeting: Seneca Valley 27, Hempfield 15
This is a big game for both teams as they try to qualify for the WPIAL playoffs. Both are coming off close losses. … The Raiders are winless in the conference, but an upset of the Spartans would be big with Central Catholic and North Allegheny looming. The Raiders blew a 29-19 lead in the fourth quarter last week. Cayden Parker scored twice and rushed for 112 yards. … QB Dom Detruf completed 21 of 35 passes for 319 yards and three touchdowns against Norwin. WR Jack Kopas caught 12 passes for 148 yards, and WR Henry Mutschler had six grabs for 147 yards.
Class 5A Big East
No. 5 Penn-Trafford (6-1, 2-1) at Franklin Regional (1-6, 1-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Panther Stadium, Murrysville
Last week: Penn-Trafford 33, Gateway 23; Franklin Regional 21, Fox Chapel 10
Last year’s meeting: Penn-Trafford 26, Franklin Regional 10
One-loss Penn-Trafford is quietly on a three-game winning streak. The Warriors rallied past Gateway in the Victory Bell game with 26 unanswered points after falling behind 23-7 at the half. Ben Grabowski, one of several playmakers, ran for 151 yards and two touchdowns, and Travis Moorhead fell on a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. … Franklin Regional broke a seven-game losing streak as backup quarterback Jake Pucka threw for 148 yards and a touchdown. Jet Taylor and Ty Leonard had interception returns, and Jay Austin returned a punt for a score.
Class 4A Big Six
Belle Vernon (1-5, 0-2) at Laurel Highlands (2-5, 0-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Mustang Stadium, Uniontown
Last week: Chartiers Valley 36, Belle Vernon 35; Ringgold 47, Laurel Highlands 7
Last year’s meeting: Belle Vernon 47, Laurel Highlands 10
Belle Vernon, with its daunting schedule, gave one-loss Chartiers Valley all it could handle. Chace Petrosky ran for a school-record 339 yards and four touchdowns in the loss by the Leopards, who only lost by four to Thomas Jefferson. Their schedule includes Central Valley, McKeesport, Aliquippa, South Fayette and Trinity. … Laurel Highlands dropped its fifth straight game despite cutting Ringgold’s lead to 19-7 at halftime. Marion Jones had a 62-yard touchdown run for the Mustangs, who have been outscored 267-67.
Class 3A Interstate
Derry (3-4, 0-2) at Greensburg Salem (2-5, 0-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Offutt Field, Greensburg
Last week: Elizabeth Forward 56, Derry 7; Mt. Pleasant 42, Greensburg Salem 29
Last year’s meeting: Greensburg Salem 28, Derry 0
Derry lost its third consecutive game as the Trojans fell behind 42-0 at halftime to No. 3 Elizabeth Forward. Anthony Sacco had the lone score in the setback. Dylan Pitzer (6-foot-6, 250 pounds) is a hulking playmaker on defense for Derry. … Greensburg Salem’s losing streak stretched to four despite a close first half against Mt. Pleasant. The Golden Lions got out to a 10-0 lead and trailed 21-17 at the half. Brody Chismar threw for 255 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a score in the loss. It was the third time the Golden Lions have allowed 42 or more points this season.
No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (6-1, 2-0) at Yough (2-5, 0-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Cougar Mountain, Herminie
Last week: Elizabeth Forward 56, Derry 7; Southmoreland 41, Yough 0
Last year’s meeting: Elizabeth Forward 45, Yough 7
This is not a favorable matchup for the Cougars against the third-ranked Warriors. … Brayden Kollar caught two touchdown passes and finished with five catches for 79 yards against Derry. QB Ryan Messina completed 14 of 21 passes for 181 yards. … The Cougars have dropped five consecutive games. They are struggling to score. They were held scoreless by Southmoreland. QB Aiden Shaffer rushed for 45 yards and completed 4 of 12 passes for 27 yards.
Class 2A Allegheny
South Park (3-4, 0-3) at Ligonier Valley (1-6, 0-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Weller Field, Ligonier Valley
Last week: OLSH 14, South Park 13; Ligonier Valley 67, Charleroi 13
Last year’s meeting: South Park 33, Ligonier Valley 0
Ligonier Valley’s offense broke out in a big way against Charleroi. … South Park has struggled to score during its four-game losing streak. Finding the end zone against OLSH were QB Robert Lenzi and Colsen Heynes. Lenzi scored on a 1-yard run, and Heynes caught a 37-yard pass from Lenzi. … LV got two interception returns for touchdowns (72 and 32 yards) by junior Gregory Sleasman. Sophomore Mike Hillen returned a fumble 66 yards for a score. Freshman QB Levi Foust rushed for 113 yards and two scores and threw a touchdown pass. Junior Brody Stitt rushed for 100 yards and a score.
Class A Black Hills
Monessen (4-3, 1-2) at Burgettstown (1-5, 0-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Hill Memorial Stadium, Burgettstown
Last week: Chartiers-Houston 31, Monessen 18; Neshannock 34, Burgettstown 7
Last year’s meeting: Monessen 34, Burgettstown 17
These teams are fighting for a wild-card berth in Class A. Both teams need two wins to be considered by the WPIAL committee. … Monessen RB Rodney Johnson scored touchdowns on runs of 58 and 26 yards, and RB Tavian Taylor scored on 26-yard run. The Greyhounds allowed a kickoff return for a touchdown to tie the score 18-18 and turn the momentum against Chartiers-Houston. … Burgettstown dropped a nonconference game to Neshannock. RB Brady Rightweiser rushed for 71 yards and scored on a 51-yard run. QB Blake Neal competed 10 of 16 passes for 107 yards.
Class A Eastern
Brentwood (2-4, 1-2) at Jeannette (4-3, 2-2)
7 p.m. Friday, McKee Stadium, Jeannette
Last week: Brentwood 27, Riverview 14; Jeannette 37, Greensburg Central Catholic 22
Last year’s meeting: Jeannette 42, Brentwood 41
Both teams scored important wins last week to stay in the playoff chase. Jeannette is tied for third place with Riverview, whereas Brentwood is in fourth. … Brentwood used a 20-point first half to build a cushion against Riverview. Cedric Davis ran for 200 yards and four touchdowns on 23 carries, and Connor Kmetz threw for 107 yards and two scores. The Spartans have scored 130 points and allowed 132. … Jeannette also had a big first half before holding off rival GCC. Kymon’e Brown threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 146 yards and two scores. Xavier Odorisio-Farrow and Noah Sunder had TD receptions. Jeannette rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat the Spartans last year.
Springdale (0-5, 0-3) at Greensburg Central Catholic (3-4, 1-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Centurion Stadium, Carbon
Last week: Clairton 51, Springdale 0; Jeannette 37, GCC 22
Last year’s meeting: GCC 51, Springdale 0
A week after postponing its game against Leechburg, short-handed Springdale fell to No. 2 Clairton. The Bears put up 34 points in the first quarter. The Dynamos have lost 21 in a row. They are allowing 46.8 points a game. … GCC has dropped two in a row to move to the outskirts of the playoff race and likely has to win out to have a chance at the postseason. Samir Crosby had a big second half last week when he moved to quarterback and rushed for 211 yards and a touchdown and also passed for 137 yards and a score. He had an 80-yard TD run. Bobby Smithnosky, who went from QB to receiver, ran for a TD and caught a scoring pass.
Nonconference
Class 5A No. 1 Pine-Richland (6-1) at Latrobe (2-5)
7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Latrobe
Last week: Pine-Richland 63, Penn Hills 19; Kiski Area 34, Latrobe 13
Last year’s meeting: Pine-Richland 42, Latrobe 0
High-powered Pine-Richland rolled to its fifth straight win with its second straight 63-point game. Khalil Taylor scored three touchdowns, including one on a kick return, and Aaron Strader scored two rushing touchdowns for the Rams. Their lone loss is to Findlay, Ohio, Ben Roethlisberger’s alma mater. … Latrobe dropped its third straight game as the Wildcats allowed Kiski Area quarterback Landyn Artman to throw for 273 yards and five touchdowns. Chris Cochran ran for a score, and Aaron Gaskey caught a scoring pass from Ty Wisniewski, who could share snaps with starter Dom Scarton.
