Here’s a look at the don’t-miss matchups for Week 8 in Westmoreland County:

Class 6A

No. 5 Canon-McMillan (4-4, 2-2) at No. 3 Norwin (5-3, 2-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Norwin Knights Stadium, North Huntingdon

Last week: North Allegheny 21, Canon-McMillan 13; Central Catholic 35, Norwin 6

Last year’s meeting: Canon-McMillan 27, Norwin 6

Last year’s matchup was a nail-biter as Norwin staged a fourth-quarter rally before falling short. The Knights trailed 27-14 entering the fourth. Norwin missed two extra points in the fourth, which proved to be the difference. … Canon-McMillan played North Allegheny close last week but settled for two second-half field goals and lost by eight. Ty Jansma passed for 154 yards and a touchdown. TJ Sabatucci caught a TD pass. … Norwin, inching closer to a playoff spot, lost to top-ranked Central Catholic on Thursday night, falling behind 21-0. The Knights forced two turnovers but could not convert either into points. Potter Brozeski caught a 51-yard TD pass from Tristyn Tavares.

Hempfield (4-4, 1-3) at Mt. Lebanon (1-7, 1-3)

7 p.m. Friday, Mt. Lebanon Stadium, Mt. Lebanon

Last week: Seneca Valley 47, Hempfield 8; Penn Hills 19, Mt. Lebanon 14

Last year’s meeting: Mt. Lebanon 42, Hempfield 20

Hempfield struggled in its fourth loss in five games with a sluggish offense and permeable defense never getting untracked. The Spartans, who must win this week to have a chance at the playoffs, had several players sustain injuries, including linemen Brock Heisler and Jake Wiederstein. The Spartans ran for only 66 yards and quarterback Dom Detruf was limited to 79 yards. … Mt. Lebanon took a 7-6 lead into halftime against Penn Hills but allowed two fourth-quarter scores. Pat Smith, a dynamic dual-threat quarterback, ran 32 times for 180 yards and a touchdown. He also threw a scoring pass to Kris Kambitsis.

Class 5A Big East

Armstrong (3-5, 2-2) at No. 5 Penn-Trafford (7-1, 3-1)

7:30 p.m. Friday, Warrior Stadium, Harrison City

Last week: Kiski Area 27, Armstrong 25; Penn-Trafford 48, Franklin Regional 14

Last year’s meeting: Penn-Trafford 35, Armstrong 14

This is a battle for a WPIAL playoff spot. Penn-Trafford clinches with a win, Armstrong stays alive with a win. … Armstrong QB Jayden Oliver has completed 75 of 125 passes for 1,055 yards. He rushed for two touchdowns in a loss to Kiski Area. Quinn Olsen returned a kickoff for a score against the Cavs. … Penn-Trafford RB Ben Grabowski scored three touchdowns against Franklin Regional. He has rushed for 658 yards and nine scores this season. Cody Yacamelli has rushed for 555 yards and scored 10 times, while Nick Ponko has 35 catches for 561 yards and three scores. Jack Miller had field goals of 37 and 47 yards.

Franklin Regional (1-7, 0-4) at No. 3 Woodland Hills (6-2, 4-0)

7 p.m. Friday, Wolvarena, Turtle Creek

Last week: Penn-Trafford 48, Franklin Regional 14; Woodland Hills 42, Gateway 28

Last year’s meeting: Woodland Hills 27, Franklin Regional 17

Woodland Hills is in cruise control having already clinched a WPIAL playoff berth. Franklin Regional is trying to improve for next season. … Franklin Regional sophomore QB Dom Devola has completed 54 of 119 passes for 582 yards and four touchdowns. RB Jet Taylor has rushed for 562 yards and scored five touchdowns. … Woodland Hills WR Scoop Smith returned a kickoff 70 yards for a score and ran 73 yards on a run against Gateway. Cam Walters completed 9 of 15 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns.

Gateway (2-6, 2-3) at Latrobe (2-6, 1-3)

7 p.m. Friday, Latrobe Memorial Stadium, Latrobe

Last week: Woodland Hills 42, Gateway 28; Pine-Richland 43, Latrobe 7

Last year’s meeting: Latrobe 28, Gateway 27

Gateway traded scores with No. 3 Woodland Hills and took a 14-14 tie into the half, but the Gators’ undoing was a 22-point fourth quarter by the Wolverines. Mayson Mitchell was 20 of 40 for 209 yards in the loss. Laimon Bates had two touchdowns for the Gators, who have lost three straight. Shawn Moorefield threw a TD pass to Chris Carter. … Latrobe’s losing streak stretched to four as Class 5A No. 1 Pine-Richland cruised with a big second half. Sawyer Butina caught a 49-yard TD pass from Dom Scarton for the Wildcats’ only points. Standout receiver Andy Tatsch, a Lehigh commit, remains sidelined with a hip injury.

Class 4A Big Six

Ringgold (4-4, 1-2) at Belle Vernon (2-5, 1-2)

7 p.m. Friday, James Weir Stadium, Rostraver

Last week: Thomas Jefferson 42, Ringgold 6; Belle Vernon 48, Laurel Highlands 6

Last year’s meeting: Belle Vernon 49, Ringgold 7

This neighborhood rivalry separated by the Monongahela River goes back to the early 1970s after Monongahela and Donora merged to become Ringgold. They have had some great battles, and this one may involve playoff implications. … Ringgold QB Dennis Hawkins, who transferred from Monessen, and QB Demetri Lowe connected for a score against Thomas Jefferson. Lowe has 42 catches for 663 yards. Hawkins has thrown for 983 yards and 11 scores. … Belle Vernon QB Curtis Wade has completed 61 of 94 passes for 798 yards. He rushed for three touchdowns against Laurel Highlands. Chase Petrosky scored two touchdowns last week and has rushed for 622 yards this season.

Class 3A Interstate

Mt. Pleasant (5-3, 2-1) at Derry (4-4, 1-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Trojan Stadium, Derry

Last week: Southmoreland 14, Mt. Pleasant 0; Derry 43, Greensburg Salem 28

Last year’s meeting: Mt. Pleasant 31, Derry 14

This is a battle for third place in the conference and a playoff berth. … If Mt. Pleasant wins, it could face Elizabeth Forward for a share of the conference title next week if EF beats Southmoreland. Mt. Pleasant RB Stephen Predajna was held to 40 yards last week at Southmoreland. He has 492 yards and eight scores this season. QB Dane Firmstone has thrown for 555 yards. Richard Shawley and Rage Suchar are his main targets. … Derry is led by RB Max Doherty, who has rushed for 825 yards and 15 touchdowns. He scored four times at Greensburg Salem last week. QB Anthony Sacco was 5 for 7 for 159 yards and two scores, while Karsen Weiers had three catches for 140 yards and two scores.

Yough (2-6, 0-3) at Greensburg Salem (2-6, 0-3)

7 p.m. Friday, Offutt Field, Greensburg

Last week: Elizabeth Forward 55, Yough 7; Derry 43, Greensburg Salem 28

Last year’s meeting: Greensburg Salem 37, Yough 8

Yough lost its sixth straight game following a 2-0 start. The Cougars have scored 20 points during the skid. Ryan Sarver caught a 71-yard touchdown pass from Aidan Shaffer for the only points in last week’s game. … Greensburg Salem has lost five straight following a two-game winning streak. The Golden Lions gave up 29 first-half points last week and could not slow Derry’s running game. Brody Chismar was 16 of 31 for 182 yards and a touchdown. LeTrey Derry had a big night as he returned a kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown and rushed for two other scores. … Yough is allowing 37.5 points, Greensburg Salem 34.8.

Class 2A Allegheny

Ligonier Valley (1-7, 0-4) at No. 5 Steel Valley (5-3, 3-1)

7 p.m. Friday, Campbell Field, Munhall

Last week: South Park 42, Ligonier Valley 21; Steel Valley 38, OLSH 6

Last year’s meeting: Steel Valley 53, Ligonier Valley 7

The Rams are trying to build on a tough season. Freshman QB Levi Foust has shined. He rushed for 122 yards and two touchdowns against South Park. He has 567 yards this season. The Rams rushed for more than 250 yards last week. … Steel Valley RB Da’Ron Barksdale has rushed for 1,089 yards and 17 touchdowns. He returned an interception 59 yards for a score last week. Tyrell Beland has 20 catches for 322 yards.

Class A Eastern

Frazier (4-4, 2-3) at Greensburg Central Catholic (4-4, 2-3)

7 p.m. Friday, Centurion Stadium, Carbon

Last week: Frazier 41, Riverview 20; Greensburg Central Catholic 52, Springdale 14

Last year’s meeting: Greensburg Central Catholic won by forfeit

Frazier forfeited last year’s matchup due to a shortage of healthy players. Both teams remain in the playoff chase. … Frazier has won two of three. Last week, Derek Diamond ran for 284 yards and five touchdowns on 37 carries. The Commodores scored 28 points in the second half. Brady Secrest also had a rushing TD. … GCC snapped a two-game skid with a rout of undermanned Springdale. Samir Crosby ran for two scores, caught a TD pass and threw for another. Bobby Smithnosky, James Botti, Jerry Davis and Max Weber also scored for the Centurions.

Jeannette (5-3, 3-2) at Springdale (0-6, 0-4)

7 p.m. Friday, Springdale High School Athletic Field, Springdale

Last week: Jeannette 23, Brentwood 18; Greensburg Central Catholic 52, Springdale 14

Last year’s meeting: Jeannette 42, Springdale 0

Jeannette took a big step toward a playoff spot with it second straight home win. Kymon’e Brown passed for 149 yards and a touchdown and ran for 128 and another score. Jayce Powell returned a punt 66 yards for a score, a pivotal play in the fourth quarter. … Springdale has lost 22 straight games. The Dynamos have had trouble fielding enough healthy players. R.J. Landis and Corey Brooks had touchdown runs last week against GCC.

Class A Black Hills

No. 3 Bishop Canevin (5-3, 3-1) at Monessen (5-3, 2-2)

7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Monessen

Last week: Fort Cherry 56, Bishop Canevin 19; Monessen 40, Burgettstown 21

Last year’s meeting: Bishop Canevin 56, Monessen 20

Bishop Canevin is coming off a tough loss to No. 1 Fort Cherry. Can the Crusaders bounce back? Both teams are in playoff contention. … Bishop Canevin’s Myontae Mott has 42 catches for 542 yards and 12 scores. He scored twice against the Rangers. QB Brady Wagner has thrown for 597 yards and 10 touchdowns. … Monessen returned three interceptions and had a kickoff return for a score against Burgettstown. Kayden Kolbeck returned an interception 69 yards and caught a 75-yard touchdown pass from Kaier Payne. RB Tavian Taylor has rushed for 547 yards and 10 touchdowns.
