Westmoreland County high school football matchups for 2025 Week 9

Here’s a look at the don’t-miss matchups for Week 9 in Westmoreland County:
Class 5A Big East
Franklin Regional (1-8, 0-5) at Armstrong (3-6, 2-3)
7 p.m. Friday, NexTier Bank Athletic Complex at Armstrong Stadium, Manor Township
Last week: Woodland Hills 55, Franklin Regional 7; Penn-Trafford 42, Armstrong 7
Last year: Armstrong 29, Penn-Trafford 26
Franklin Regional remained winless in conference play, allowing 40 or more points for the fourth time this season. Jay Austin was a bright spot for the Panthers, returning a kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. … Armstrong ran into a surging Penn-Trafford team and suffered its third straight conference loss. Jaydon Oliver threw for 146 yards and a touchdown in the loss. The River Hawks are allowing a conference-high 34.1 points a game.
Latrobe (2-7, 1-4) vs. No. 4 Penn-Trafford (8-1, 4-1)
7:30 p.m. Friday, Warrior Stadium, Harrison City
Last week: Gateway 27, Latrobe 24; Penn-Trafford 42, Armstrong 7
Last year: Penn-Trafford 20, Latrobe 13
Penn-Trafford has a playoff berth locked up and looks to win its sixth consecutive game. Latrobe looks to snap its five-game losing streak. … The Wildcats saw the return of Andy Tatsch against Gateway after he missed the first seven games with a hip injury. Sawyer Butina returned a free kick for a touchdown, and Danny Noonan returned an interception for a score. … Nick Ponko returned an interception 50 yards for a touchdown and caught an 80-yard pass from Nate Desmond for a score. Desmond was 5 of 8 for 178 yards and four touchdowns. Cody Yacamelli rushed for 70 yards on five carries.
Class 4A Big Six
No. 5 Trinity (5-4, 4-0) vs. Belle Vernon (3-5, 2-2)
7 p.m. Friday at James Weir Stadium, Rostraver
Last week: Trinity 48, Laurel Highlands 0; Belle Vernon 48, Ringgold 6
Last year: Trinity 31, Belle Vernon 21
Trinity might be the surprise of Class 4A. It clinched a tie for the conference title last week. Belle Vernon needs a victory to be considered for a wild-card berth. … The Hillers have won four consecutive games after starting 1-4. They played a tough nonconference schedule. Owen Gardner rushed for 222 yards and three touchdowns against Laurel Highlands. … Belle Vernon has outscored its past two opponents 48-6. Last week, Chase Petrosky rushed for 156 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Curtis Wade threw a touchdown pass and rushed for two scores. Preston Rathway booted two field goals.
Class 3A Interstate
Greensburg Salem (3-6, 1-3) at No. 5 Southmoreland (8-1, 3-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Russ Grimm Field, Alverton
Last week: Greensburg Salem 41, Yough 7; Elizabeth Forward 42, Southmoreland 0
Last year: Greensburg Salem 28, Southmoreland 21
A year ago, the Golden Lions upset the Scotties. Will it happen again? The Scotties, who have clinched a berth in the playoffs, look to bounce back. … QB Brody Chismar owns two Greensburg Salem passing records: career yards and touchdowns. He completed 15 of 27 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns last week. He also ran for a score. Max Topper caught nine passes for 139 yards and two scores. … The Scotties struggled offensively against Elizabeth Forward. QB Dawson Wolfe threw for 102 yards. MLB Stanley Chapman is the team’s leading tackler.
Mt. Pleasant (5-4, 2-2) at No. 3 Elizabeth Forward (8-1, 4-0)
7 p.m. Friday, Warrior Stadium, Elizabeth
Last week: Derry 33, Mt. Pleasant 13; Elizabeth Forward 42, Southmoreland 0
Last year: Elizabeth Forward 56, Mt. Pleasant 26
Mt. Pleasant faces a must-win game to have a shot at the playoffs. The Vikings could not stop Derry’s running game last week and also allowed several deep passes. The Vikings have dropped back-to-back games after winning four straight. Stephen Predajna and Dane Firmstone had rushing touchdowns last week. … Elizabeth Forward made a statement with a runaway victory against undefeated Southmoreland, winning the conference title in impressive fashion. Ryan Messina was 14 of 19 for 160 yards and rushed for 193 yards and three scores.
Yough (2-7, 0-4) at Derry (5-4, 2-2)
7 p.m. Friday, Trojan Stadium, Derry
Last week: Greensburg Salem 41, Yough 7; Derry 33, Mt. Pleasant 13
Last year: Yough 55, Derry 14
Yough is trying to do what it did a year ago by snapping a seven-game losing streak with a final-week win. The Cougars fell behind 21-0 and never recovered last week. John Gergely had a rushing TD. … Derry announced it was still a playoff contender with a dominant victory against Mt. Pleasant and can clinch a berth with a win. Anthony Sacco threw for 161 yards and two touchdowns, and Max Doherty rushed for 118 yards and a score. Max Doperak had two TD receptions for the Trojans.
Class 2A Allegheny
Ligonier Valley (1-8, 0-5) vs. Apollo-Ridge (6-3, 4-1)
7 p.m. Friday, Owens Field, Apollo
Last week: Steel Valley 49, Ligonier Valley 0; Apollo-Ridge 45, South Park 34
Last year: Apollo-Ridge 31, Ligonier Valley 28
Apollo-Ridge has clinched a berth in the WPIAL playoffs, but a win and a Steel Valley win against South Allegheny would create a three-way tie for first place. … Ligonier Valley looks to finish strong by upsetting Apollo-Ridge. Freshman QB Levi Foust has rushed for 619 yards and six touchdowns. He has thrown for 423 yards and three touchdowns. … Last week, QB Alexander Clawson rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown and completed 6 of 8 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. Jaden McCray caught a 73-yard touchdown pass and ran a yard for a score.
Class A Black Hills
Cornell (5-4, 2-3) vs. Monessen (5-4, 2-3)
7 p.m. Friday, Memorial Stadium, Monessen
Last week: Chartiers-Houston 27, Cornell 26; Bishop Canevin 44, Monessen 7
Last year: Cornell 41, Monessen 6
A wild card berth in the WPIAL Class A playoffs could be on the line for the winner. … Cornell blew leads of 12-0 and 26-7 in a loss to Chartiers-Houston. Isaiah Dawson caught two touchdown passes, and Khyril Johnson rushed for 190 yards. … The Greyhounds are coming off a loss to Bishop Canevin. Tavian Taylor has been the team’s leading offensive player. He has scored 10 touchdowns while rushing for 641 yards. DE Rodney Johnson is the top defensive player.
Class A Eastern
Leechburg (6-2, 4-1) at Greensburg Central Catholic (4-5, 2-4)
7 p.m. Friday, Centurion Stadium, Carbon
Last week: Leechburg 48, Brentwood 41; Frazier 35, GCC 33
Last year: GCC 20, Leechburg 16
Playoff-bound Leechburg erupted for 34 second-half points and held off a 21-point fourth quarter by Brentwood to down the Spartans. Tim Andrasy ran for 348 yards and five touchdowns on 39 carries. Tristan Zalenski had an 88-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. … GCC’s playoff hopes took a big hit last week. The Centurions have conference losses to Riverview and Frazier. Jerry Davis caught a touchdown pass from Samir Crosby and kicked two field goals in the loss. Crosby had two TD runs and scored on a fumble recovery on offense.
Riverview (4-4, 2-3) at Jeannette (6-3, 4-2)
7 p.m. Friday, McKee Stadium, Jeannette
Last week: Clairton 66, Riverview 0; Jeannette 50, Springdale 8
Last year: Jeannette 34, Riverview 20
Riverview, like the rest of the Eastern A, fell victim to high-powered Clairton for its second straight loss. The Raiders’ playoff chances are slim with one week remaining. … Jeannette clinched a playoff spot when Riverview lost to Clairton. The Jayhawks were met with little resistance against Springdale. Jayce Powell caught two touchdown passes and returned a punt for a score, and Nick Mendoza added two rushing TDs. The Jayhawks will try to take a four-game winning streak into the postseason.
Nonconference
Gateway (3-6) at Hempfield (4-5)
7 p.m. Friday, Spartan Stadium, Hempfield
Last week: Gateway 27, Latrobe 24; Mt. Lebanon 28, Hempfield 6
Last year: Hempfield 41, Gateway 21
Gateway snapped a three-game losing streak with a win at Latrobe. Mayson Mitchell was 21 of 29 for 261 yards and three touchdowns, and Jayden Stammer caught four passes for 110 yards and two scores. … Hempfield continued its late-season slide with its fifth loss in six games. Dom Detruf finished 27 of 48 for 239 yards and a late touchdown. The Spartans are eliminated from playoff contention.
