Dusi commits
Belle Vernon junior tennis standout Gabby Dusi announced she has made a verbal commitment to play at St. Francis (Pa.), a Division I program in the Northeast Conference.
Dusi has won back-to-back WPIAL singles championships and last season reached the PIAA semifinals.
Stein has surgery
Jeannette ace softball pitcher Grace Stein is recovering from surgery on the ACL of her left knee.
Stein, a junior, was injured while playing for the soccer team in September and had surgery in October.
Stein said she can return to training next month. She does not expect the injury to her “drag” leg to affect her pitching.
“I have been told that this would strengthen my legs, since I have been doing a lot of leg and core exercises three times a day,” she said. “This has given me the opportunity to work on more of my spin drills while I have been off. Overall, I think I will come off of this injury stronger and have a good junior year.”
WCCA calendar
With the sixth boys basketball shootout in the books, the Westmoreland County Coaches Association will turn its attention to one of its most popular events, the wrestling championships.
The event, which added girls wrestling last year, will be Jan. 10-11 at Greensburg Salem.
After that, the county coaches will host the boys and girls bowling championships Jan. 18 at Hillview Lanes in Greensburg.
To cap the winter slate, the WCCA girls and boys swimming championships will be Jan. 24-25 at Derry.
Hockey talk
Penn-Trafford is second in the PIHL Class 2A with 62 goals, and Latrobe is third with 53. The Warriors have more goals in the third period than any team in the classification with 27.
