Jeannette football standout Kymon’e Brown is expected to see increased college recruiting attention as the clock ticks toward his senior season.

Brown, a quarterback and defensive back, received his first NCAA Division I offer last week as Navy reached out.

The TribLive Westmoreland Player of the Year last fall helped lead Jeannette to the WPIAL Class A semifinals as a No. 13 seed.

He threw for 1,844 yards and 25 touchdowns and rushed for 1,257 yards and 15 scores, adding 40 tackles and two interceptions on defense.

Brown is being recruited as an athlete but has said he would enjoy playing wide receiver at the next level.

Agostoni a Laker

Latrobe soccer standout Roman Agostoni will continue his playing career at Mercyhurst, a second-year Division I program that plays in the Northeast Conference.

A midfielder, Agostoni was the TribLive Westmoreland player of the year last season when he has 33 goals and 15 assists in leading Latrobe to its first section title and playoff win while breaking the program record for goals.

The all-state player had 63 goals and 35 assists in his career.

Good old Offutt

Jeff Fisher, a national high school football historian and co-founder of High School Football America, said his research finds Offutt Field in Greensburg may be the oldest preps stadium in the nation still in use.

Offutt Field, in the heart of Westmoreland County and in the shadow of the courthouse, opened in 1890 and has undergone numerous renovations.

Fisher featured the venue as a “Stadium of the Night” with a YouTube video of the 2005 dedication ceremony at the field.

Formerly called Athletic Park, Offutt Field was named after school director James H. Offutt in the late 1920s.

The stadium has been home to high school, college and pro football, and minor league baseball games.

Hockey semifinals

The Latrobe and Penn-Trafford hockey teams advanced to the PIHL Class 2A semifinals and will play in Tuesday’s semifinals.

No. 4 Penn-Trafford (15-4-1-1) faces Fox Chapel at 7 p.m. at Robert Morris Island Sports Center in Moon.

Latrobe (16-5-0-0), the No. 3 seed, will play Cathedral Prep at 9.

Penn-Trafford lost both regular-season games to Fox Chapel, 4-1 and 3-2.

Cathedral Prep beat Latrobe twice, as well, 4-2 in the season opener and 6-3.

The 2A championship is set for 6:15 p.m. March 18 at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in Cranberry.

Southmoreland staff

Dustin Shoaf, Southmoreland’s 23-year-old first-year football coach, has assembled a staff.

The Scotties’ assistant coaches next season will include Rich Kolesar (defensive coordinator), Jaylen McNair (offensive coordinator), AJ Blasco (assistant head coach, special teams, running backs, defensive backs), Joe Pergar (passing game coordinator), Scott Wood (offensive consultant), Max Malis (defensive line), Terry Quashnock (linebacker, strength and conditioning) and Kaden Tkacs, an alum and student assistant.

Kolesar is the former head coach at Laurel Highlands who coached star Rodney Gallagher.

McNair coached running backs and quarterbacks at Mercyhurst and Tiffin. He played quarterback at Glenville State and Alderson Broaddus.

Blasco was an assistant at Yough, Hempfield and Jeannette. He coached Shoaf at Yough.

Pergar, the only holdover from former coach Tim Bukowski’s staff, also has been an assistant at Laurel Highlands and Connellsville.

Wood is the former Yough head coach who had Shoaf in his backfield.

Malis was a standout lineman at Derry and played college football at Mercyhurst.

Another offer for Tatsch

Latrobe football player Andy Tatsch added his second Ivy League college offer, from Yale.

Penn offered last month.

Tatsch, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound junior, plays wide receiver and safety for the Wildcats.

Two more for Heisler

Hempfield football lineman Brock Heisler’s list of Division I offers keeps growing.

Last week he added two more in Lafayette and New Hampshire.

Heisler (6-3, 255) is a junior two-way lineman.

Recruiting

Ligonier Valley senior Gabby Palmer will continue her track and field and cross country career at Allegheny College. Palmer is a fourth-year distance runner for the Rams.
