After going 13-6 overall and 10-2 in section play last season, the Greensburg Central Catholic girls volleyball team returned a large senior class, including setter Maura Oslosky, who has plenty of experience at the varsity level.

“I definitely think we have enough talent to get far,” Oslosky said about her outlook for this season. “We have really good girls this year. I think we can get pretty far.”

GCC has certainly played to that standard so far, winning three of its first four section games and seven of its first eight overall.

The good start should pay dividends, as just four of the team’s remaining nine games are section games.

“I’m really proud of my team. I think we all got so much better from last year,” Oslosky said. “We all work really well together as a team. We’re really meshing this year.”

Being such a senior heavy team, that means most of the girls have played together for the last four years.

“I think we all know how each other plays, and we know who’s going to be able to do what on the court,” Oslosky said.

That familiarity extends all the way to the top.

Coach Erin Salas, who joined the team in her current role three seasons ago, coached the present seniors at the junior varsity level.

“She really pushes us to do our best,” Oslosky said. “She knows what we’re all capable of, so she pushes us to reach our maximum potential.”

As a setter, there’s a lot of emphasis for Oslosky to collect assists, which includes a 24-assist performance against Trinity Christian on Sept. 11.

“I think it’s important to give everybody the best sets that I can,” Oslosky said. “It’s pretty much my job to get everybody the perfect set.”

Oslosky has not yet decided on a college but plans on attending school for civil engineering and potentially playing volleyball if the opportunity comes up.

This week, Oslosky took some time for a Senior Spotlight Q&A:

How did you get started with volleyball?

My older sister actually played before I even started. She used to have me pepper with her in the driveway. It was always so much fun when I played with her, and it made me want to start playing, too.

What goals do you have personally or team-wise this year?

I think our team goals are to keep our energy up and always give 100% effort. I always want to try my best and try to make sure all my teammates are doing the best they can and that nobody’s upset during play.

What’s your specific role on the team this year?

I’m one of the setters, so I help run the offense. It’s up to me to make good decisions based on the other team’s defense and blocking and who’s doing the best during the game.

Is there one memory from your high school career that sticks out?

I would say sophomore year, we beat Bishop Canevin. I think it was five sets. It was probably one of the best games we’ve ever played, and we fought so hard.

What is one thing that people might not know about you?

I have a lot of different interests that aren’t volleyball. I think sometimes I’m so volleyball-focused that it seems like that’s the only thing going on. I play a few different instruments, and I like to draw and crochet.
