Sprinter Ryan Schiller last spring had the best finish at the PIAA 3A championships by a Norwin athlete, taking second in the 100-meter hurdles in 14.36 seconds.
The achievement sure looked good on his college application.
Schiller announced he will continue his track career at Duquesne.
He is a late commit, but a commit nonetheless.
“I loved their program, and they have a very welcoming community at Duquesne, a lot like what I was used to at Norwin,” the recent graduate said. “And that’s what I was looking for. They have very nice facilities, and the coaches are very talented in the respective fields and very technical with their teachings and I like the technical aspect of sports.”
Schiller was the Knights’ lone gold medalist at last year’s WPIAL championships. He won the 110 hurdles in 14.3 seconds.
The plan at Duquesne is for Schiller to focus on the 110 and 400 hurdles.
Schiller plans to continue his training regimen to achieve success at the college level.
“Their culture and program was a lot like how it was at Norwin, and I had great success there, so why change the way I approach my work?” he said. “Emily Brozeski, a Norwin and Duquesne alum, was a huge part of the process, giving me insights and sharing her experiences.
“Norwin track and field, as well as outside programs like NSSA, set me up for success at Duquesne.”
County golf
The first fall event on the Westmoreland County Coaches Association calendar will be this week.
The girls golf championship is set for Thursday at Champion Lakes Golf Course in Bolivar.
The event is nine holes and begins at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start.
There will be a new individual champion since Hempfield’s Milana Yannascoli graduated. Hempfield’s team, though, will try to defend the Class 3A title.
Greensburg Central Catholic is the returning 2A champion.
Individual runner-up Gianna Johnson of Franklin Regional is one to watch. She won the title in 2023 on a scorecard playoff.
Kennedy Kelly of Greensburg Central Catholic also returns after a third-place finish last year.
Also keep an eye out for Norwin senior Adalena Robb.
The WCCA boys golf tournament is Sept. 11 at Latrobe Elks Golf Club.
Yough baseball coach
Yough hired a baseball coach last week to replace Dan Palm, who resigned after three years as head coach and 10 years overall with the program.
Andy Chopp, a Yough alum and former Ringgold assistant coach, will lead the Cougars next spring.
Chopp also was an assistant basketball coach and head middle school softball coach at Yough, and he was an assistant softball coach at Penn-Trafford and Mt. Pleasant.
He also coached the Fayette Force and West Hempfield Wildcats in summer baseball.
