Newly hired coach Jon Dobrinski is primed to lead the Greensburg Central Catholic boys soccer team this fall.

An assistant last season, he replaces Ryan Kanner, who resigned in the spring after two seasons.

Kanner went 14-19-1 and led the Centurions to the playoffs both years.

Dobrinski has coached for 10 years as the director of coaching for the Penn-Trafford Soccer Club.

“This program has a proud history of success,” Dobrinski said. “And I am committed to building on that foundation, installing a strong team culture, developing our players and guiding this group back to the high standards that define GCC soccer.”

Mickens on the rise

Jackson Mickens is going into only his sophomore year but already has begun to carve a path to Division I college football.

Mickens, a 6-foot, 215-pound edge rusher who attends Geibel but plays football at Southmoreland as part of a co-operative, is up to three Division I scholarship offers.

Sacramento State, where Greensburg Salem alum Brennan Marion is a first-year head coach, offered Mickens, who had 11 sacks last season as a freshman.

His other offers are from Akron and Miami Ohio.

Singing their praises

Penn-Trafford softball pitcher Allyson Paulone joined her teammates last Tuesday night at PNC Park as the Pirates honored WPIAL and PIAA champions.

But the rising junior ace did more than smile for the Jumbotron.

She sang the national anthem before the Pirates played the St. Louis Cardinals.

Warriors coach Denny Little said his Class 5A state title-winning pitcher initially auditioned to sing in April but was not given a game date to show up and sing.

The Pirates lined up the team recognition with Paulone’s appearance and she got the best of both worlds.

This was the fourth time Paulone has sung the anthem before a Pirates game. She said the experience helped to calm her nerves. Slitghtly.

“I can definitely say that I was more nervous because I knew a lot of people there,” Paulone said. “I knew what to expect with the feedback from the stadium. I also thought it was so cool having my teammates there, and they were so supportive. I was happy we all had another opportunity to hang out as a team.”

Paulone also will sing the anthem for a Savannah Bananas’ game Aug. 29 at PNC Park.

“So this was almost like a warm-up since there will be so many more people,” she said.

Hempfield also was recognized by the Pirates for its WPIAL Class 6A title run.

Crosby, Smith MVPs

A number of local football players took part in the 2Tenths Top 150 Camp last week at Shady Side Academy.

Two came home with MVP awards.

Greensburg Central Catholic rising senior Samir Crosby was voted top wide receiver among upperclassmen. Crosby plays quarterback for the Centurions but is getting recruited by Division I schools as a receiver.

Meanwhile, rising sophomore Anthony Smith was named upperclassmen MVP at quarterback for the second straight summer.

Smith, who threw for more than 2,000 yards as a freshman last year at Southmoreland, transferred to Seton LaSalle.

Wachinski transfers

Basketball player David Wachinski has transferred from Greensburg Central Catholic to Ringgold.

The rising junior guard was a key reserve last season for the Centurions.

He was a starter for Ringgold last week during the Tre Cunningham Memorial Tournament at Jeannette.
