One Division I girls athlete is impressive, but Southmoreland had two put pen to paper at a recent signing ceremony.

Seniors Allison Stinnett and Megan Mehall will play at college’s highest level in their respective sports.

Stinnett signed to swim at Bowling Green, and Mehall will compete in track and field at West Virginia.

Stinnett is a four-year WPIAL qualifier and three-year PIAA qualifier, competing in the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes and 200 individual medley.

As a junior, she won her second WCCA titles in the 200 IM and 100 breast, and finished WPIAL runner-up in the latter and fourth in the former. At the PIAA meet, she took third in the too breast and eighth in the 200 IM.

Mehall last spring was a WPIAL and PIAA finalist in the 800-meter dash. As a sophomore, she broke the school record in the 400 (58.24 seconds).

Samide commits

Tyler Samide, a senior baseball player at Greensburg Central Catholic, committed to play at Division III Chatham.

Samide last season went 6-0 with a 1.79 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 43 innings. He also hit .339 and drove in 26 runs.

Package deal?

It almost happened.

Longtime friends from Jeannette and opposing quarterbacks nearly ended up playing college football together.

Samir Crosby of Greensburg Central Catholic committed to Georgetown last week, but his second choice was North Carolina A&T.

When North Carolina A&T offered Crosby, he told coaches there to look at Jeannette standout Kymon’e Brown, Crosby’s buddy and rival for the last four years.

Crosby and Brown confirmed they considered joining forces at the next level, but Crosby grew closer to Georgetown and committed before Brown ever heard from A&T.

Brown said he would like to announce his commitment near the midway point of basketball season. He has an offer from Navy, but Duquesne reportedly is showing interest.

Smith all-state

Former Southmoreland quarterback Anthony Smith, who transferred to Seton LaSalle before landing at Fairmont Senior (W.Va.) was named to the West Virginia Sports Writers Association Class 3A all-state second team.

Smith threw for 2,279 yards and 26 touchdowns for the Polar Bears.
