The Westmoreland County Coaches Association will host its annual boys golf championship Thursday at Latrobe Elks Golf Course.

With two-time winner Nick Turowski of Penn-Trafford now playing at West Virginia, the field is more open.

The long-hitting Turowski won last year with a 4-under-par 68, adding a title to his 2021 triumph.

Penn-Trafford also won the Class 3A team title. Greensburg Central Catholic returns as the 2A champion.

Braden Riley of GCC was the runner-up last year with a 74. Jordan Mocello of Belle Vernon was third with a 75, and Parker Berk of Latrobe and Seth Tomalski of Belle Vernon matched 76s.

All four players return for this year’s tournament.

Belle Vernon won the WPIAL 2A team title last season.

Package deal

A pair of Norwin girls basketball players are headed for the same college program.

Guards Kendall Berger and Averi Brozeski announced they have committed to Clarion of the Division-II Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference.

Wheeling and West Virginia Wesleyan also offered scholarships to both players.

Berger also had offers from Fairmont State and Seton Hill.

Brozeski also has an offer from IUP.

Both girls were key players on last year’s WPIAL Class 6A championship team. Berger was the second-leading scorer for the Knights, and Brozeski was a key reserve.

Another senior, Bella Furno, also has an opportunity to play at West Virginia Wesleyan.

VanDivner commits

Belle Vernon softball player Lauren VanDivner will continue her playing career at Potomac State, a National Junior College Athletic Association Division II program in Keyser, W.Va.

VanDivner has plated third base and catcher. She was an all-state second-team pick two years ago during Belle Vernon’s WPIAL championship run.

Singles night

The WPIAL girls tennis individual postseason starts Wednesday with section tournaments at various locations.

The top finishers at each site will advance to the WPIAL singles championships Sept. 18 at Bethel Park (2A) and North Allegheny (3A). The championship matches will be Sept. 19 at North Allegheny.

Golf sites

Courses for the WPIAL individual golf postseason are set.

Tournaments are 36 holes and played over a week’s time at different venues.

The boys 2A first round will Sept. 23 at Youghiogheny Country Club, and the final round will follow Oct. 2 at Sewickley Heights Golf Club.

Boys 3A will be Sept. 24 (first round) at Southpointe Golf Club and Oct. 1 at Oakmont Country Club (final round).

The girls 3A and 2A first round is set for Sept. 23 at Willowbrook Country Club, with the final round Sept. 30 at Butler Country Club.
