Westmoreland high school roundup: Yough girls shut out Southmoreland in finale

Yough will enter the WPIAL playoffs with a little momentum after a 4-0 victory over Southmoreland (4-12, 4-8) in a WPIAL Section 3-AA girls soccer game Monday night at Cougar Mountain.
Justine Appolonia scored three times, and Natalie Vilcheck added a goal. Sara Krofcheck made three saves to secure the shutout for the Cougars (13-2, 10-2).
Yough finished second to Waynesburg (16-1, 12-0) in section play.
Mt. Pleasant 5, Greensburg Salem 1 — In Section 2-AAA, playoff-bound Mt. Pleasant wrapped up the regular season with a convincing victory to improve to 9-7-1 overall and 8-3-1 in section play.
Greensburg Central Catholic 12, Jeannette 0 — Sydney Ward and Sara Orndoff each scored three times as No. 3-ranked Greensburg Central Catholic (11-3, 10-2) defeated Jeannette (2-15, 0-12) in the Section 1-A finale.
Sam Felder, Brenna Springer, Talia Kilkeary (2), Ashley McWilliams and Leah Jacobson also scored, and Springer and Felder each had two assists.
Geibel 3, Monessen 2 — Grace Goodwin had three goals as Geibel (1-11-2, 1-9-2) won a Section 2-A game. Joelle Robinson and Natalia Holmes scored for Monessen (6-10-1, 3-8-1), which fell short of a playoff berth.
Norwin 3, North Allegheny 0 — Dani Iannuzzo scored twice on headers and Emily Harrigan added a goal as Class AAAA No. 1 Norwin (14-1-1) won a nonsection game. Julia Scamardi, Alyssa Victor and Emily Arnold each recorded an assist, and Sam Wexell had nine saves in goal.
Fox Chapel 2, Penn-Trafford 1 (OT) — Katie Livingston scored five minutes into overtime to give Fox Chapel (12-4-1) a nonsection win over No. 3 Penn-Trafford (13-3-1). Mackenzie Aunkst scored on an assist by Hannah Nguyen for P-T.
Plum 1, Franklin Regional 0 — Gina Proviano scored to lift Plum (13-3) past Franklin Regional (10-5-1) in a nonsection game.
Boys soccer
Belle Vernon 5, Southmoreland 1 — Aaron Brown scored twice, and Hunter Martin, Brandon Forte and Markello Apodiakos also scored as Belle Vernon (13-4-1) won a nonsection game over Southmoreland (4-12-1).
Jeannette 5, Geibel 4 — Tyler Elliott scored three times, and Dakota Hetherton and Matt Stoves added goals as Jeannette (1-15-1, 1-10-1) tallied a Section 2-A win for its first victory of the season.
Gateway 3, Hempfield 2 — Kyle Persin and Casey Leonard scored for Hempfield (4-11-1) in a nonsection loss. Chris Snyder had a hat trick for Gateway (7-8-2).
Greensburg Salem 1, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 (OT) — Darren Beirne scored on an assist from Ryan Bompiani, with 1:30 left in regulation to help Greensburg Salem (4-12-1) tie Class A No. 5 Greensburg Central Catholic (13-3-1).
Luke Mort scored on an assist from Sean Gargan for the Centurions.
Girls tennis
The Latrobe tandem of Addison Kemerer and Maddie Stas will play for a section title Tuesday after reaching the Section 1-AAA doubles final with three victories. After winning 10-6 in the first round and 10-5 in the quarterfinals, the pair defeated top-seeded Ashleigh Bowser and Lauren Virostek from Armstrong, 1-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the semifinals. They will play Franklin Regional's Hannah Yan and Nikki Bonacci, who upset second-seeded Abby Herman and Kyah Russell from Gateway, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals.
In the Section 1-AA tournament, section singles finalists Marlayna Verenna and Anna Vitale, both from Greensburg Central Catholic, teamed up to reach the section doubles finals with three wins, including a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over California's Kristina Luko and Sydney Smichnick. They will play South Park's Caylee Jackson and Elyssa Pemu in the finals. Mt. Pleasant's Mary Smithnosky and Abbey Scekeres will play in the consolation match against Luko and Smichnick.
Hockey
Hempfield 6, Penn-Trafford 0 — Jared Gerger had three goals and an assist, and Trent Gray added three assists as Hempfield (2-0) won a PIHL Class AA game. Jacob Anderson, Matthew Bartus and Christian Konieczka also scored.
Latrobe 8, North Hills 2 — Jared Schimizzi and Brantley Miller each had two goals and an assist as Latrobe (2-1) rolled to a PIHL Class AA win.
