Westmoreland lookahead for Week of Oct. 22, 2018

Highlights of the week ahead in Westmoreland high school sports:
MONDAY
Boys soccer: The WPIAL playoffs begin with nine county teams in action, five of which will be part of local doubleheaders.
Greensburg Central Catholic (14-1) plays Vincentian (5-8) at 6 p.m. at Franklin Regional in a Class A first-round game, followed by host Franklin Regional (14-0-1), the No. 1 seed in Class 3A, vs. No. 16 Obama (9-7-2) at 8. At Belle Vernon, the host Leopards (12-5-1) take on Kiski Area (11-6-1) at 8 p.m. at Weir Stadium in a 3A game that follows a 2A game between Southmoreland (8-9) and South Park (11-4-1) at 6.
Other local games have Monessen (8-4-2) vs. Sewickley Academy (12-4) at 6:15 at West Allegheny in Class A; Mt. Pleasant (12-4) vs. No. 9 Freedom (8-8) at 6 at Pine-Richland in 2A; Greensburg Salem (8-8) vs. West Allegheny (16-1) at 8 at West Allegheny in 3A; and Latrobe (10-6-1) vs. Butler (10-4-2) at Butler in 4A.
Girls volleyball: The WPIAL will meet to draw up playoff pairings in all four classes. Local qualifiers include: Latrobe, Hempfield and Norwin in 4A; Kiski Area, Franklin Regional and Greensburg Salem in 3A; Southmoreland, Derry and Burrell in 2A; and Greensburg Central Catholic in A.
Golf: The two-day, 36-hole PIAA individual championships begin at Heritage Hills Resort in York.
Local players set to compete are: Palmer Jackson of Franklin Regional, Brady Pevarnik of Latrobe, Tiger Hubbard of Burrell, and Abby and Meghan Zambruno of Greensburg Central Catholic.
Field hockey: The WPIAL playoffs start around the district.
TUESDAY
Girls volleyball: The WPIAL playoffs begin around the league.
Golf: Boys and girls individual champions will be crowned in Class AAA and AA at the PIAA finals in York.
Tennis: The PIAA team playoffs begin.
WEDNESDAY
Girls soccer: First-round winners will play quarterfinal games around the WPIAL.
Golf: The PIAA team championships will be contested at Heritage Hills in York. The Greensburg Central Catholic girls will go for a Class 2A title.
THURSDAY
Boys soccer: The WPIAL playoffs move into the quarterfinals at neutral sites.
Cross country: The best teams and individual runners will gather at up-and-down course at Cal U for the WPIAL championships.
FRIDAY
Football: The top games in the county have Franklin Regional visiting Penn-Trafford in a playoff tuneup that will help sort out final positioning in the 5A Big East standings, and Clairton at Jeannette will decide the Eastern Conference champion and home field in the first round.
Other games that could carry playoff implications include Seneca Valley at Norwin (6A) and Greensburg Salem at Indiana (4A).
An intriguing nonconference game has Greensburg Central Catholic at Southmoreland.
SATURDAY
Girls soccer: The WPIAL playoffs move into the semifinal round.
