Westmoreland lookahead for Week of Oct. 8, 2018

Highlights of the week ahead in Westmoreland high school sports:

MONDAY

Girls soccer: Coming off an upset of top-ranked South Park, Yough is locked in a tight battle for fourth place — and potentially the final playoff spot — in Section 3-AA. The Cougars have a chance to score an important win as they host Brownsville, which won the first meeting 4-2.

Another 3-AA game with playoff implications is Waynesburg at Mt. Pleasant (3-AA).

Also keep an eye on Greensburg Salem at Belle Vernon (2-AAA).

Boys soccer: The top game in Section 3-AAA has Belle Vernon at first-place Laurel Highlands. The initial matchup resulted in a 1-1 tie.

Girls golf : The WPIAL Class AAA team semifinals will be played at Rolling Acres Golf Course. Franklin Regional and Penn-Trafford are in the 10-team field. The top four advance to the finals.

TUESDAY

Boys soccer: Mt. Pleasant will host to unbeaten Deer Lakes in Section 2-AA. The Lancers edged the Vikings earlier in the season 2-1.

Norwin at Connellsville (3-AAA), Greensburg Salem at Belle Vernon (3-AAA) and Greensburg Central Catholic at Winchester Thurston (2-A) are other top games.

Boys golf : Meadowink and Butler’s golf courses will host WPIAL Class AA team semifinals, with the top finishers advancing to the finals. Class AAA semifinal courses are Buffalo and Village Green. Penn-Trafford will be at the former, Latrobe at the latter. The top three teams at each site go to the finals.

Greensburg Central Catholic and Mt. Pleasant will be at the Class AA semifinal at Meadowink.

Girls volleyball : Hempfield at Norwin (3-AAA) and Franklin Regional at Armstrong (1-AAA) are key matches.

WEDNESDAY

Girls soccer: Belle Vernon at Elizabeth Forward (2-AAA) and Connellsville at Hempfield (3-AAAA) could help sort the playoff picture.

Girls tennis: The WPIAL team playoffs begin.

THURSDAY

Boys soccer: A pair of Section 3-AAAA games worth a look are Penn-Trafford at Norwin and Latrobe at Hempfield.

Girls soccer: Freeport at Greensburg Salem is a good nonsection matchup.

Golf: Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver is the site for the WPIAL boys and girls team championships. The GCC girls will go for their fourth straight Class AA title.

Cross country: The Westmoreland County Coaches Association cross country championships will be held at Westmoreland County Community College.

Girls volleyball: Ligonier Valley (5-5) travels to United in a Heritage Conference match.

FRIDAY

Football: Top games featuring area teams include Derry at Yough and Elizabeth Forward at Mt. Pleasant in the Class 3A Big East; Belle Vernon at West Mifflin (4A Big Eight); Canon-McMillan at Norwin (6A); and Greensburg Central Catholic at Jeannette (A Eastern). The game of the night in the District 6 Heritage Conference is Northern Cambria at Ligonier Valley.

Girls soccer: A nonsection game to watch is Norwin at North Allegheny.

SATURDAY

Boys soccer : Norwin at Franklin Regional (11:30 a.m.) and Greensburg Salem at Latrobe (3:30 p.m.) are notable nonsection games.
