While conference games kick off for many WPIAL teams this weekend, Week 3 of the high school football season begins with the second league game in the City League for both Westinghouse and Perry.

Following a loss to Beaver in Week Zero, two time state runner-up Westinghouse has won two straight games, outscoring the Linsly School and Brashear last week in the District 8 opener by a combined 116-0.

Last week, the Bulldogs crushed the Bulls, 64-0, thanks to 36 second-quarter points.

Khalil Mitchell, Jordan Reid and Khalil Green each scored two touchdowns for a Westinghouse team that returned two punts, one kickoff and an interception for scores.

Perry began the season with a loss to independent Uniontown, 34-6.

Last week, the Commodores were blanked in their City League opener by Allderdice, 32-0.

When Westinghouse and Perry played last year, the Bulldogs cruised to victory, 52-6.

Green was 8 of 10 passing for 174 yards and two touchdowns, along with a 66-yard scoring run.

The game was tied 6-6 in the first quarter before Westinghouse scored the final 46 points of the game.

Kickoff Thursday at George Cupples Stadium is at 7 p.m.

Other games involving City League teams Friday include:

• University Prep (0-2) at Steubenville (Ohio) (3-0)

• Allderdice (2-1) at Uniontown (2-1)

• Carrick (0-3) vs. Brashear (0-3) at Cupples Stadium

Crowded top in boys soccer

Things are very tight in WPIAL boys soccer Section 2-3A, where a half-game separates the top four teams.

Ringgold (4-0-1), Thomas Jefferson (4-0-1) and Trinity (3-1-2) are all tied for first place with 3-0-1 section records.

Right behind those three teams is Bethel Park (3-2), which has won three of four matches with the lone blemish being a loss to TJ.

The four not only are a combined 12-1-3 in the early part of section play, the Rams, Jaguars, Hillers and Black Hawks have outscored their section opponents by a combined score of 61-7.

On Thursday, Ringgold hosts Thomas Jefferson while Bethel Park visits Trinity.

Other key boys soccer matches Thursday include:

• Armstrong (3-1, 3-2) at Mars (3-0-1, 5-0-1) in Section 1-3A

• Montour (3-0, 5-1) at Moon (2-0, 6-0) in Section 4-3A

• South Park (3-0-1, 4-0-1) at Seton LaSalle (4-0, 5-1) in Section 3-2A

• Freedom (2-0, 3-2) at Beaver County Christian (2-0, 4-1) in Section 1-A

• Winchester Thurston (2-0, 2-2) at Trinity Christian (2-0, 4-1) in Section 4-A

Northern fights

Seneca Valley against North Allegheny in WPIAL girls volleyball is like little sister taking on big sister.

They both know each other so well, but more times than not, big sister walks away from the battle with their hand raised high.

The teams square off for the first of two regular season meeting Thursday when the Raiders host the Tigers.

Both teams won their Section 2-4A opener last week. The Tigers are 3-0 this season and the Raiders check in with a mark of 4-1 overall.

North Allegheny won both matches last season against Seneca Valley to win the section crown. When the playoff brackets came out last fall in 4A, the Tigers were the top seed and the Raiders were No. 2.

However, a possible third meeting in the district finals never materialized after Seneca Valley was knocked off in the semifinals by No. 3 Canon-McMillan.

NA won its ninth district championship and the fifth WPIAL Class 4A title in eight years.

Seneca Valley won the very first 4A championship in 2016.
