Following a couple of tournament matches this past weekend, the 2025 section schedule for most girls soccer teams in Class 3A, 2A and A begin on Monday.
Both the Moon and Avonworth girls soccer teams had a three-peat they were trying to extend to four crowns in a row last spring, Moon in the PIAA and Avonworth in the WPIAL.
However both of those golden runs ended in 2024.
The Tigers saw their streak of three straight PIAA championships close when they lost to Plum in double overtime in the WPIAL quarterfinals and didn’t qualify for the state playoffs.
The Antelopes’ run of three consecutive WPIAL soccer titles came to an end when they fell to Deer Lakes in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
Both would like to start a new championship streak this fall as they begin section play at home Monday.
Moon (0-0) hosts Chartiers Valley (0-0) in a Section 2-3A opener while Avonworth (0-1) welcomes Beaver (1-1) in a Section 3-2A lid lifter.
Defending pitch champs
Entering the 2025 girls soccer season, the four defending district champions are Peters Township in 4A, South Fayette in 3A, Quaker Valley in 2A and Springdale in A.
Two of the four are in action Monday.
Peters Township (0-0-1) is home to Penn-Trafford (0-0) in a nonsection match.
Springdale (0-0) opens up Section 4-A action on the road at The Ellis School (0-0).
Teeing up for first
The 2025 WPIAL boys team golf season already enters its third week of action with two section showdown matches set for Monday.
In Section 4-3A, Franklin Regional (3-0) and Central Catholic (2-0) are tied for the top spot and square off in the first of two regular season meetings Monday.
The Panthers and Vikings clash at the Meadowink Golf Course in Murrysville at 2:30 p.m.
In Section 6-3A, Upper St. Clair (4-0) and Moon (3-0) are set to clash for the first time.
The Panthers host the Tigers at St. Clair Country Club at 3:30 p.m.
