Two teams that clashed for district gold not once, but two years in a row nearly a decade ago, headline a busy night of WPIAL girls basketball nonsection action Monday.
North Allegheny (0-2) tries to shake off a slow start as it hits the road for the first time this season with a visit to defending Class 5A champion Peters Township (2-1) at 6 p.m.
The Tigers dropped a couple of games in their own tipoff tournament over a week ago when they fell to Trinity by 15 points and lost to South Fayette by 30 points.
The Indians lost their season-opener to Canon-McMillan before winning twice this past weekend in the Baldwin/Peters Township tipoff tournament, beating 2025 Class 6A champion Upper St. Clair by eight points and Pine-Richland by 23 points.
These two programs locked horns in the WPIAL Class 6A championship game two straight years back in 2018 and 2019.
In the 2018 title game, North Allegheny cruised to back-to-back crowns with a convincing 79-48 victory.
A year later, the Indians got revenge by ousting the Tigers, 43-40 in overtime.
The last time these two teams met in girls hoops, it was also in the district postseason. NA defeated Peters, 43-40, in the 2024 semifinals.
In the second game of the north-south doubleheader at AHN Arena, the Peters Township boys basketball team will host Seneca Valley at 7:30 p.m.
The Indians are off to a 3-0 start this season while the Raiders are 1-0.
Tough sledding
Two girls basketball teams that finished tied for second place in their section a year ago are both off to slow starts this season.
Both Beth-Center and California are on the road Monday searching for their first victories this year after combining to win 24 games last season.
Beth-Center (0-3) visits Uniontown (1-1) at 7:30 p.m., while California (0-3) travels to West Greene (3-1) at 7:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs and Trojans finished tied for second place in Section 3-2A last year with 7-3 section records. B-C was 13-9 overall and Cal finished 11-8.
Both lost in the first round of the 2025 WPIAL Class 2A playoffs.
Big game hunting
The Bishop Canevin boys basketball team wants to win every game, but the Crusaders are taking a big picture approach to their schedule, loading up against schools in bigger classifications in December to prepare them for the Class 3A playoffs in February.
The Crusaders sit at 2-2 as they head north Monday to battle Class 6A Butler (1-1) at 7:30 p.m.
Thus far this season, Bishop Canevin has defeated Class 4A defending champion Belle Vernon and a 4A playoff team from a year ago in Elizabeth Forward. They have lost to the 6A finalists from a year ago, New Castle and two-time champion Upper St. Clair.
On Tuesday, Bishop Canevin visits 4A power North Catholic, then faces District 10 Erie before its home opener against Washington.
Section 2-3A play begins for the Crusaders two days before Christmas when they visit McGuffey.
