With a chance of rain and temps in the mid-50’s, it’s time to open up section play around the diamonds Monday.

Four defending WPIAL baseball champions begin section play, with three ready to enjoying some home cooking.

• In Section 1-5A, Penn-Trafford hosts Latrobe, which has moved up this season from 4A.

The Warriors are 2-1 this season after returning from a trip to Vero Beach, Fla.

The Wildcats are also 2-1 overall, including a split against Scranton Prep out east.

The game is at 4 p.m.

• In Section 1-4A, North Catholic hosts Ambridge at the No Offseason Complex in Russelton at 4 p.m.

The defending champion Trojans beat Bishop Canevin in their only game thus far this season, while the Bridgers are 2-0 following wins over Bishop Canevin and New Brighton.

• In Section 4-3A, Seton LaSalle welcomes cross road neighbor Keystone Oaks at Brookline Park at 4 p.m.

The Rebels have moved up in class to 3A after winning 2A last spring.

Seton is 1-2 with a win over City League Carrick and losses to Chartiers Valley and Canon-McMillan.

The Golden Eagles are flying high at 2-0 with wins over Brentwood and Winchester Thurston by a combined score of 24-4.

• In Section 3-A, the only 2024 district winner in action Monday is Bishop Canevin.

The 0-2 Crusaders look for that first win of the season when they visit Sewickley Academy.

This is the season opener for the Panthers.

Other two champs

The other two district baseball winners from the 2024 season who aren’t opening up section play Monday are still in action.

Class 6A will begin section play in April, so North Allegheny is in search of win No. 1 this season when it visits Norwin.

The Tigers are 0-1 following a loss last week to Pine-Richland, while the Knights are also looking for their first victory of the season after a 0-3 start.

Avonworth continues its southern trip to Myrtle Beach on Monday when it battles Calhoun Academy of South Carolina.

The Antelopes’ split their first two games on the trip, which concludes with a game slated for Tuesday.

6A leads the way

While Class 5A through A get started in section action in WPIAL baseball and 6A beginning later, the opposite is true in district softball.

The only classification to begin section play in softball Monday is the class with only one section, 6A.

Four games get the ball rolling in the nine-team Class 6A.

The last two 6A district softball champions are off to good starts in 2005.

Defending champion Seneca Valley is 2-0 as it hosts the newest 6A team, Woodland Hills, at 4 p.m.

The Wolverines are 0-1.

The 2023 Class 6A winner Hempfield is 3-0 this spring and will visit North Allegheny at 4 p.m. in a game on Trib HSSN.

The Tigers are 1-2 this season.

The other two 6A section openers pit Butler (0-3) at Pine-Richland (1-0) at 4 p.m., and Norwin (0-3) hosting Canon-McMillan (1-1) at 4 p.m.
