As we enter the final night of section play in WPIAL girls soccer, 14 of the 15 section titles have been decided.
The only one going down to the wire is for the crown in Section 2-3A.
The Monday schedule will be highlighted by Montour at Moon in a battle between two teams with a combined record of 26-3 this season.
Moon is in first place with an 11-0 section record. A win or tie clinches the section championship outright.
The Tigers have won 10 consecutive matches since suffering their only loss back on Sept. 6 in overtime to Pine-Richland, 2-1. They have shut out their last six opponents.
Montour is one game back at 10-1 in the section. A win give them a share of the section title.
The Spartans are on a five-game winning streak since losing 2-1 to Moon at home Sept. 17.
In the first meeting, Kendall Dydek scored for Moon and Irelynn Hobbs got the equalizer for Montour. Then with six minutes remaining in regulation, Riley Lafayette booted home the game-winner on a free kick.
Girls soccer playoff field to be finalized
A total of 58 WPIAL girls soccer teams have qualified for the upcoming district playoffs.
Two or three more could round out the final field on Monday.
• In Section 2-3A, Chartiers Valley and Blackhawk enter the final night of section play tied for fourth place with section records of 3-6-2.
The Colts visit Trinity (1-8-2) while the Cougars travel to West Allegheny (7-4).
A Chartiers Valley win or a Blackhawk loss clinches a playoff berth for the Colts and eliminates the Cougars.
The only hope for Blackhawk is a win or tie in its match and a Chartiers Valley loss.
• In Section 1-A, the Ellis School and Greensburg Central Catholic are tied for fourth place with 3-6 sections records.
The Tigers visit Winchester Thurston (6-2-1) on Monday while the Centurions travel to Springdale (8-0-1).
If both teams win, lose or tie, they both qualify for the playoffs since they split their two head-to-head matches this season.
Serving up the Final Four
The two WPIAL defending champions in girls team tennis have reached the district semifinals, however neither is the favorite.
In Class 3A, 2024 winner Mt. Lebanon must face 2025 No. 1 seed Shady Side Academy in a semifinal at 3 p.m. Monday at Sewickley Academy.
The other final four contest in 3A pits No. 2 Bethel Park against No. 3 North Allegheny at Chartiers Valley at 3 p.m.
In Class 2A, defending champion and No. 2 seed North Catholic will battle the surprise team in the final four, Winchester Thurston, at 3 p.m. at Quaker Valley.
The Bears upset No. 3 Sewickley Academy in the quarterfinals, 4-1.
In the other semifinal, top-seeded Quaker Valley will take on No. 4 Oakland Catholic at North Allegheny at 3 p.m.
The tennis championship matches will take place Wednesday at the Janet L. Swanson Tennis Center at Washington & Jefferson College.
The third-place district consolation finals will also be Wednesday at a site to be determined.
