The final day of section play in WPIAL girls soccer is Monday.

The race for a playoff spot in Section 2-4A has been tight all season, and one game separates three teams.

It’s a win-and-you’re-in match when Mt. Lebanon visits Bethel Park.

The Blue Devils are 7-4-2, while the Black Hawks are 7-6.

In the first meeting Sept. 9, Mt. Lebanon blanked visiting Bethel Park, 3-0.

Canon-McMillan is also 7-4-2, but the Big Macs already have clinched a playoff berth heading into their regular-season finale at Baldwin (2-11).

If Canon-McMillan and Bethel Park lose, the Big Macs would have the better record. If Canon-Mac and Mt. Lebanon lose, they would be tied, but the Big Macs own the tiebreaker over the Blue Devils after going 1-0-1 against them head-to-head.

3A postseason berth up for grabs

The one other postseason question mark is in Section 2-3A, where Laurel Highlands is 7-6 and has a half-game lead over Belle Vernon at 6-6-1 for fourth place.

Laurel Highlands will host Connellsville (9-4) on Monday, while Belle Vernon is home to Elizabeth Forward (10-2).

If Laurel Highlands were to tie and Belle Vernon win, leaving both teams tied for fourth place, they would both qualify.

Happy Valley golfing

Monday marks Day 1 of the 2023 PIAA boys and girls individual and team golf championships at the Penn State Golf Course in State College.

In boys Class 3A, 14 WPIAL golfers will take part in the individual state championships, including District 7 champion Nick Turowski of Penn-Trafford. District champion Peters Township will participate in the PIAA team finals.

In boys 2A, 18 golfers will be part of the individual finals field, including WPIAL champion Nixen Erdely of Frazier. Representing the WPIAL in the PIAA team 2A championships is Belle Vernon.

In girls 3A, the WPIAL will have seven golfers participating in the individual finals, including district champion Mya Morgan of Elizabeth Forward. In the PIAA team tournament, Peters Township represents District 7.

In girls 2A, six District 7 golfers will be part of the PIAA individual championships while Greensburg Central Catholic will once again be the WPIAL team participating in the PIAA team finals.

The 36-hole individual event is scheduled to continue Tuesday, with the team competition Wednesday.
