What to watch for in WPIAL sports for Oct. 2, 2023: WPIAL boys golf champions to be crowned

The district will be dishing out golf gold Monday with the final round of the 2023 WPIAL boys Class 3A and 2A individual golf championships.

The boys 3A final round will take place at the ValleyBrook Country Club in McMurray with 39 golfers participating.

Penn-Trafford senior Nick Turkowski has the 18-hole lead after shooting a 72 in the first round last week at the Latrobe Country Club.

Upper St. Clair junior Connor McKenzie is one stroke off the lead while Fox Chapel junior Davis Kittsley and North Allegheny sophomore Ravi Desai are four strokes back after shooting a four-over par 76 in the first round.

The rest of the top seven includes Butler senior Hunter Swidzinski (77), Peters Township junior Colton Lusk (78) and Shaler junior Jacob Crissman (78).

The top 14 scorers from the 36-hole WPIAL championships will qualify directly to the PIAA championships at Penn State on Oct. 18 provided their score in the WPIAL championship final round does not exceed 100.

The boys 2A final round will take place at the Butler Country Club with 37 golfers participating.

Quaker Valley junior Ethan Dai has the lead after shooting a 69 in the opening round last week at the Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo.

Brownsville senior Daniel Sethman and Elizabeth Forward freshman Aaron Didjunas are two strokes off the lead after shooting a 1-under par 71 in the first round.

The rest of the top seven includes Frazier senior Nixen Erdely (72), OLSH sophomore Jonah Schllaert (73), Belle Vernon sophomore Jordan Mocello (73) and Sewickley Academy junior Severin Harmon (75).

Girls soccer showdowns

There are two weeks left in section play in WPIAL girls soccer, so the hunt for section titles and playoff seeding is heating up as we begin October action on the pitch.

First place is up for grabs in three district matches Monday:

In Section 3-3A, Latrobe visits Plum.

The Mustangs are perfect in section play at 8-0, while the visiting Wildcats are a game back in the loss column at 6-1.

Latrobe’s only loss of the season came at home to Plum on Sept. 6, 3-2.

In Section 2-2A, Freeport hosts Burrell.

The visiting Buccaneers are in first place with a 5-1 section record while the Yellowjackets are 4-1-1, a game up on Knoch at 4-2-1.

Burrell lost at home to Freeport last month for their only section loss, 2-1.

In Section 4-2A, South Park travels to Shady Side Academy.

The Eagles are flying high in first place at 6-0 while the host Bulldogs are a game back at 5-1.

South Park blanked SSA in their first meeting this season, 1-0.

Girls tennis doubles bracketology

On Monday, the WPIAL will unveil the brackets for the upcoming WPIAL girls tennis doubles championships.

The first round, quarterfinals and semifinals of the 2A tournament take place Wednesday at North Allegheny while the first three rounds of the 2A tournament will be held Wednesday at Bethel Park.

The championship finals and consolations are set for Thursday at North Allegheny.

The 2022 champions were Sophia Cunningham and Sylvie Eriksen of Mt. Lebanon in 3A and Ally Bauer and Lindsey Greb of Knoch in 2A.
