The opening round of the 2025 WPIAL soccer playoffs continues Monday with first round matches in three brackets, including girls Class 4A.

There are only four first round matches slated in the opening round as the top four seeds; No. 1 Peters Township (14-2-2), No. 2 Seneca Valley (10-3-2), No. 3 Norwin (14-3) and No. 4 Pine-Richland (14-2-1) enjoy Round 1 byes.

Two of the four first round contests are rematches from earlier this season.

No. 7 Upper St. Clair (9-5-2) hosts No. 10 Penn-Trafford (10-6-1) at 6:30 p.m.

The first time these two played at P-T in late August, the Panthers blanked the Warriors, 4-0.

The winner advances to play Seneca Valley on Thursday.

Also on the right side of the bracket, No. 11 Butler (7-8-1) visits No. 6 Mt. Lebanon (12-5) at 6:30 p.m.

The two played at Butler in late August, and the Blue Devils beat the Golden Tornado, 3-1.

The winner takes on No. 3 Norwin in the quarterfinals.

In the other first round matches Monday, Latrobe (8-6) goes up against Canon-McMillan (8-6-1) at Big Mac Stadium in Canonsburg at 6:30 p.m. with the winner facing top-seeded Peters Township in the second round.

No. 5 North Allegheny (13-3-2) welcomes No. 12 Armstrong (7-10-1) at 6:30 p.m. with the victor heading to the quarterfinals to battle Pine-Richland.

3A girls soccer bracket similarities

When the 2024 Class 3A girls soccer brackets came out last fall, Fox Chapel was No. 1, South Fayette was No. 2, Moon was No. 3 and Plum was seeded No. 4.

This year, the Foxes are No. 1, the Lions are No. 2 and the Mustangs are No. 4 again, with Moon sitting at the No. 3-seed.

South Fayette defeated top-seeded Fox Chapel in the finals a year ago; now, it’s time to find out how this year’s tournament plays out as eight first round matches are slated for Monday.

South Fayette (15-1-1) is trying to win a third straight WPIAL soccer championship as the Lions open the postseason at home against No. 15 Elizabeth Forward (7-6) at 6:30 p.m.

The Lions have won 15 straight matches since starting the season 0-1-1.

The Warriors have not won more than two in a row all season and are coming off a loss to Franklin Regional in the regular season finale.

Here are the other seven girls soccer 3A first round matches:

• Top seed Fox Chapel (15-1-1) hosts No. 16 Laurel Highlands (6-8-1) at 6:30 p.m.

History not in Eagles’ favor in 2A boys soccer

In the last 25 years, there have been 15 WPIAL boys soccer teams that were able to repeat as district champions, but they all failed to three-peat.

Winning three straight boys titles on the pitch has proven to be extremely tough.

The last time it was done was when the Quaker Valley boys program claimed district crowns in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

Two teams are trying to break that drought this season with Bentworth in Class A and South Park in 2A.

South Park (17-1) will begin its quest Monday when it hosts No. 16 Southmoreland (8-10) at 6:30 p.m.

The Eagles have won 11 straight and have outscored opponents 35-2 in that span.

Following four wins in a row, the Scotties begin the playoffs on a two-game losing streak.

Here are the other seven boys soccer 2A first round matches:

• No. 9 Beaver (13-4) travels to No. 8 Charleroi (13-4) at 6:30 p.m.

• No. 4 Avonworth (15-2-1) will be home to No. 13 McGuffey (12-6) at 6:30 p.m.

• No. 12 Elizabeth Forward (11-7) travels to No. 5 Mt. Pleasant (14-4) at 6:30 p.m.

• No. 2 Quaker Valley (15-2-1) welcomes No. 15 Highlands (8-7-1) at 6:30 p.m.

• No. 10 Shady Side Academy (11-4-1) takes on No. 7 Seton LaSalle (15-3) at Dormont Stadium at 8 p.m.

• No. 3 North Catholic (15-2-1) battles No. 14 Yough (13-5) at Dormont Stadium at 6 p.m.

• No. 6 Deer Lakes (14-3-1) hosts No. 11 Central Valley (12-5) at 6:30 p.m.

Volleyball pigtails

The first round of the WPIAL volleyball playoffs takes place Tuesday and Wednesday, but before that, the Class 3A and 2A playoff fields will be finalized with six preliminary round matches.

In Class 3A, two section foes collide for a third time to determine the No. 16 seed when Derry (6-5) battles Franklin Regional (7-6) at Gateway at 7:30 p.m.

The Trojans and Panthers finished tied for fourth place in Section 5-3A, with Derry winning the first match, 3-1, and Franklin Regional prevailing in the second contest, 3-2.

The winner will visit top-seeded Oakland Catholic (17-1) on Tuesday.

The other Class 3A preliminary round match pits Ringgold (10-6) against Blackhawk (8-7) at Peters Township at 6 p.m.

The Rams vs. Cougars winner is the No. 15 seed and will travel to No. 2 Beaver (16-1) in the first round on Tuesday.

There are four preliminary round matches in Class 2A:

• Shenango (7-6) plays Deer Lakes (9-5) at Gateway at 6 p.m. for the No. 14 seed and a trip to visit Seton LaSalle (18-2) in the first round.

• South Allegheny (15-5) battles Carlynton (7-10) at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart at 6 p.m. for the No. 13 seed and a return trip to play OLSH in the opening round on Tuesday.

State golf tees off

The first 18-holes of the 36-hole PIAA boys and girls individual golf championships begin Monday.

The 90th annual state individual golf finals take place at the Blue and White courses at Penn State.

The WPIAL will have 48 golfers participating in the two-day event.
