Welcome to September and opening night of section play in WPIAL girls volleyball for teams in Class 3A and 2A.
The feature match to get the ball rolling in Section 1-2A is a rematch of the district finals last fall.
A year ago, Quaker Valley went a perfect 14-0 to win the section crown, finishing two games ahead of runner-up Hopewell.
No. 1-seeded Quaker Valley did not lose a game in eliminating Keystone Oaks, Ellwood City and Southmoreland to reach the 2A finals.
No. 3-seeded Hopewell knocked off McGuffey and Avonworth in the first two rounds, and then edged Neshannock in a five-game semifinal thriller to get back to the finals.
In the title match, the Quakers swept the Vikings, 25-22, 25-20, 25-16, to win the school’s first girls volleyball championship.
On Tuesday, the two collide again in the section opener as Quaker Valley visits Hopewell.
Playoff teams clash in section openers
Five Section 3 teams qualified for the 2024 Class 2A girls volleyball playoffs, part of the reason the bracket was bloated with 22 schools.
Waynesburg Central won the Section 3-2A title, followed by runner-up Charleroi, third-place McGuffey and a tie for fourth place that put both Bentworth and Brownsville into the postseason.
On Tuesday in the section lid lifters, four of the five playoffs teams from last fall open up against each other.
The top two teams collide from a year ago when Waynesburg Central visits Charleroi.
Also on Tuesday, McGuffey travels to Brownsville and Bentworth is home to Chartiers-Houston. The Bucs finished a game behind the Bearcats last year in sixth place.
Climbing the ladder on the pitch
Tuesday is a busy day of WPIAL nonsection boys soccer action.

The Highlanders are 2-0 in Section 3-A and 4-0 overall while the Cougars are tied for first place in Section 4-2A at 2-0, 3-0 overall.
