Now that we are into the second half of section play in WPIAL girls soccer, there are a definitive top two teams being chased by others in many of the district sections.
However, there are a couple of sections where the fight for first place is a lot murkier.
In Section 2-4A, one game separates the top three teams as Peters Township sits in first with a 6-0-1 section record, followed by Upper St. Clair at 6-1 and Canon-McMillan at 5-1-1.
On Monday, the front-running Indians host the Big Macs.
These two teams played to a scoreless tie in their first meeting in Canonsburg.
In Section 2-2A, one game is the difference between Freeport (4-0-1), Burrell (4-1) and Knoch (3-1-1).
The Buccaneers host the Knights for second place behind the Yellowjackets.
Knoch suffered its lone section loss at home to Burrell, 3-2, in their first contest.
Things are even closer in Section 1-A where Riverview, Springdale and Greensburg Central Catholic are tied for first with 5-1 section records.
The Raiders visit the Centurions on Monday. GCC won the first meeting in August, 4-3, at Riverside Park.
More fights for 1st
There are two more Monday matches in girls soccer with first-place implications.
In Section 1-3A, first-place Mars at 6-0 will host second-place Hampton at 5-1.
The Talbots’ lone loss of the season came at home against the Fightin’ Planets, 3-1. Since then, Hampton has won six in a row, yielding only one goal in those six games.
Mars is 8-0 overall, and that goal allowed in the win over Hampton is the only goal allowed by the Planets this season.
In Section 1-2A, first-place Avonworth is 6-0 and will visit second-place North Catholic, which is 5-1 in section play.
The Antelopes beat the Trojans in overtime in their first meeting 3-2.
Avonworth is 6-0-2 since that match, and North Catholic is 6-1 since that road section loss back in August.
Boys golf 1st round
On what should be a gray, rain-free, comfortable day, the top district boys golfers will hit the links for the first round of the WPIAL individual championships.
The Class 3A first round takes place at Latrobe Country Club with 95 golfers participating.
The Class 2A opening round will be at Willowbrook Country Club in Apollo with 89 golfers.
The top 36 golfers and ties will qualify for the WPIAL individual championships final round Oct. 2.
Tennis titles up for grabs
On Friday, North Allegheny hosts Pine-Richland in a nonconference football battle of powers.
However the schools will clash Monday with a section title up for grabs when the Tigers host the Rams in girls tennis.
Both teams come into the battle for the Section 2-3A crown with 6-0 section records.
The same scenario takes place in Section 3-3A when neighbors collide for section supremacy as Fox Chapel hosts Shady Side Academy.
The Foxes and Bulldogs are both 6-0 in section play.
