Class 4A section play begins in WPIAL girls soccer Wednesday.

• North Allegheny has captured three of the last five 4A girls soccer titles. The Tigers begin Section 3-4A action by hosting North Hills in a match on Trib HSSN.

NA is 1-1 heading into its section opener, which also is its first match against a WPIAL opponent.

The Tigers opened the season with a shutout win over Altoona before falling to Cumberland Valley, 2-1.

• Last year in Section 2-4A, Upper St. Clair and Peters Township each finished with only one loss in the section, however the Panthers had more wins and won the section title.

On Wednesday, both open section play on the road. USC travels to Baldwin while Peters Township visits Canon-McMillan.

Other soccer section lid lifters

Besides Class 4A, two sections in 2A and one in Class A also roll out the red carpet on section openers Wednesday.

• Freeport and Mt. Pleasant were 2A section winners a year ago.

The Yellowjackets open up the Section 2-2A schedule at home against Shady Side Academy while Mt. Pleasant opens Section 4-2A action on the road at Ligonier Valley.

• In a Section 2-A opener, Waynesburg Central visits Bentworth in a battle of undefeated teams.

Thus far in nonsection play, the Raiders are 3-0 while the Bearcats are 2-0.

Waynesburg Central finished third behind Charleroi and Chartiers-Houston a year ago, while Bentworth just missed the playoffs after finishing two points behind fourth-place South Allegheny.

Time running out

This week is proving to be a great opportunity for any WPIAL boys or girls golf teams to play catch up with great weather expected each day.

The district team golf season is into the second half, so any team looking up at the top two in their section must hit the urgency button over the final few weeks.

One of those teams is the Central Valley girls.

The Warriors are currently in fifth place in Section 2-2A and will visit second-place North Catholic on Wednesday afternoon.

Once a power in girls team golf, Central Valley won five WPIAL 2A crowns from 2010-14.
