What to watch for in WPIAL sports on April 10, 2025: Class 6A teams battle for supremacy in 3-game section series

The weather forecast for Thursday calls for slightly higher temperatures with the mercury sneaking back into the 50s; however, rain is likely to put a damper on most of the scheduled WPIAL baseball and softball games.

However, there is hope for teams to play ball if the game is scheduled for turf rather than a natural surface.

Thus the chances for most of the four Class 6A baseball games to take place are pretty decent.

Both of the Section 1-6A contests are slated for turf, as is one of the two Section 2-6A games.

In Section 1, the three-game showdown section series between Butler (3-2, 6-2) and North Allegheny (2-0, 4-2) concludes with a game played at Pullman Park in Butler at 6:30 p.m.

The Tigers are going for the sweep after winning two low-scoring games in the series, 3-1 on Monday and 2-1 on Wednesday.

The series between North Hills (0-4, 2-7) and Central Catholic (2-2, 5-2) also wraps up at the Vikings’ home field of No Offseason in Russellton at 3:45 p.m.

This is the rubber game of the series after the Vikings won 3-1 on Monday and the Indians prevailed 1-0 on Wednesday.

In Section 2-6A, it will only be the middle game of a three-game section set when Norwin (1-2, 3-5) takes on Canon-McMillan (3-0, 7-1) at the home of the Washington Wild Things, newly named EQT Park.

The Big Macs took the opener Wednesday, 4-3.

The final game of the Mt. Lebanon (1-0, 2-6) at Hempfield (2-2, 4-5) series is for now scheduled for the grass field at the home of the Spartans.

The Blue Devils are looking to sweep the Spartans following a 3-1 win Monday and a 9-2 victory Wednesday.

Softball standouts

Thursday is a makeup date for district softball teams to catch up on their section schedule.

Three games stand out, including an early showdown in Section 2-4A.

Coming into Wednesday, three teams sat atop the section standings without a loss: West Mifflin, Laurel Highlands and Elizabeth Forward.

The Titans beat Oakland Catholic on Wednesday to improve to 4-0 in the section, the Mustangs lost to Belle Vernon to fall to 2-1, and the Warriors did not play and remain 2-0 in the section.

Laurel Highlands has back-to-back big road games as it visits Elizabeth Forward on Thursday and travels to West Mifflin on Friday.

In Section 3-2A, while Chartiers-Houston remains undefeated overall and in first place, the two teams on its heels meet when Seton LaSalle (1-1) hosts Burgettstown (1-1).

Finally in Section 4-2A, two teams with only one loss each go head to head for the first time this season when Frazier (2-0, 5-1) visits Washington (0-1, 4-1).

Fight for first on the court

First place is up for grabs in a pair of WPIAL Class 3A boys volleyball matches set for Thursday.

Penn-Trafford and Latrobe are both 3-0 in the section and a combined 14-1 overall.

The Warriors visit the Wildcats with the winner taking over sole possession of first place in Section 2-3A.

Both teams are coming off tough, five-set victories Tuesday with Penn-Trafford edging Norwin and Latrobe defeating Armstrong by scores of 3-2.

In Section 3-3A, there is a three-way tie for first place between Seneca Valley, Pine-Richland and North Allegheny.

The Raiders, Rams and Tigers are all 2-1 in the section.

On Thursday, Pine-Richland visits North Allegheny while Seneca Valley travels to Moon.

Crowded middle

In Section 4-2A boys volleyball, Ambridge sits in first place and Trinity is stuck in the basement.

Then there are four teams separated by one game in the middle of the section.

South Fayette and Hopewell are 2-1 while Our Lady of the Sacred Heart and Montour are 1-2.

On Thursday, Hopewell visits Ambridge, Montour hosts Trinity and South Fayette travels to OLSH.
